ARTmonday: 15 Bicycle Artworks

No deep thoughts today, or even particularly serious artwork. Just some fun images of bicycles. Over the weekend it was almost warm enough, by Boston standards (and by that I mean it was over 40 degrees and sunny), to think about getting my bike down from its hanging place and going for a ride on the Esplanade. I settled for a walk It’s wet and muddy, with dirty, frozen mounds of snow still scattered, but I’m hopeful. For now (unless I become a different person and hit the new Soul Cycle),  I’ll just enjoy these 15 bicycle artworks.

ARTmonday: Crowded Beaches

Italian photographer Massimo Vitali is one of the the most known contemporary chroniclers of the crowded beach; his work is au courant for sure. Before Vitali, there was Weegee, a photographer and photojournalist, known for his gritty black and white images, including those of crowded Coney Island. (Incidentally, Coney Island was the beach of my toddlerhood. I was born in Brooklyn, a trend-setter from a very early age.)

The other day I picked up three pieces of art at Delray Art & Framing (have a look at my  no longer bare beach condo wall), where Joe Davis’ aerial paintings of beaches dotted with sunbathers always hang. Yes, lucky me, I’m in Florida. It’s sunny, a tad breezy, not too hot. The ocean is 100 shades of blue. The beach is, well, a little bit crowded. But really, I’m not complaining, because a crowded beach is better than no beach at all. Especially given that my husband is home in Boston, where it just keeps snowing. (Sorry sweetheart.)

Here are 15 scenes of crowded beaches and waters, some more than others. And almost all are for sale (many as inexpensive prints), so if you’re tempted, click through. You should at least be able to gaze at the beach if you can’t be there, even if it’s a crowded beach.

ARTmonday: Joël Penkman

Although I don’t really recognize Valentine’s Day (just seems silly to me), I am going to take advantage of the “holiday” to post artwork and recipes for sweets, heart-shaped home furnishings, and pink rooms. To start the week, let’s look at the artwork of New Zealand-born artist and graphic designer Joël Penkman, who now lives and works in the U.K. They evoke the work American painter Wayne Thiebaud, don’t you think?

Joel Penkman paints simple still-life studies. He sets them on a clean backgrounds in order to facilitate a connection between the individual and the subject, since food, like music and fragrance, “triggers memories and emotion.” Penkman works in egg tempera, which he concocts himself.

Here are ten paintings of his that I think are the sweetest.

ARTmonday: Sydney Licht

Artist Sydney Lichtrepresented by Kathryn Markel Fine Arts in New York City and Bridgehampton, paints still life  subjects as geometric, flat forms that appear abstract, and somewhat architectural. She portrays not just the items, but the packaging, shopping bags, boxes, and inevitable detritus in which they are sold and purchased. She says, “I am interested in updating the conventions of still life by picturing items that reflect the way we currently live.” The colors are soft and alluring; she works with restricted palettes, and has at times limited herself to only four or five colors per work, and avoids using black completely. Licht attended Smith College, earned her MFA at the Art Institute of Chicago, and currently lives in New York City.

ARTmonday: Michelle Fleck

Michelle Fleck is a San Francisco artist who paints man’s effect on nature; the natural landscape turning urban. I love the pastel gone neon color palettes, and straight on, simple but roughed up vistas.
