ARTmonday: 12 Pieces at the Affordable Art Fair

Sorry for the super late posting today. Ok, tonight. I spent the weekend spring cleaning. Kinda achy now; was a workout. More importantly, the Affordable Art Fair is in New York City this week, from Wednesday, April 3 to Sunday, April 7 at the Metropolitan Pavilion, 125 West 18th Street.

The Affordable Art Fair launched in London back in 1999, a few years after founder Will Ramsay opened and found success with his gallery Will’s Art Warehouse which offered work from unknown and emerging artists priced at $100to $5,000. The gallery is still around, and the Fair now takes place in 12 cities around the world. He also founded the contemporary art hub PULSE, held annually in New York and Miami; co-founded Art Hong Kong and is a co-shareholder of Art India. I think he has my dream job.

I was hoping to go the NYC this weekend, though that’s seeming unlikely. Here’s a preview of what’s for sale. If anyone attends, I’d love to see pics, especially of purchases!

Saturday Say It: Black’s Where It’s At

Foodie Friday: Puritan & Company

Puritain & Company is a farm-t0-table Inman Square restaurant created by chef/owner Will Gilson, who actually grew up on a local farm. My husband and I went with friends earlier this winter, and liked it a lot—the food and the atmosphere. Unlike some other dining establishments of late, the menu, while on trend, is absolutely accessible. The food was inventive but not the least bit weird, and all of it was delicious. Between us we had a couple of different salads (the mesclun was way too salty though), raw oysters, grilled oysters (gorgeous), clam chowder (delicious and superbly presented—the creamy soup is poured over a row of clams at the table), pork belly, and more. We would definitely go again. And just might. We have friends in the neighborhood with whom we’re due for a date.

Site Spotlight: Dsigndot

Dsigndot, which launched in early January, sells limited edition furniture, home accessories, fashion, and jewelry by emerging and established artists and designers from across the globe. The founding partners, Swati Sharma and Kevin McClellan, who are architects and designers themselves, were motivated by the desire to offer objects not found anywhere else. They also hope to encourage artists and designer to experiment with new materials and push boundaries. Here are nine pieces I like:

Get the Look: 40 Pieces from Boston Jewelry Designers

For this season’s Style issue of the Boston Globe Magazine, in addition to a few profiles of Boston’s Most Stylish (friend and art/science documentary producer Alberta Chu, jewelry designer/computer scientist Jessica Rosencrantz of Nervous System, and Deborah Z. Porter Founder and Executive Director of the Boston Book Festival), I also wrote “Jewelry’s Big Moment.” The spread includes nine pieces from wonderful, emerging local jewelry designers. With Mass Art and the SMFA in town, (not to mention RISD in nearby Providence, but that’s a whole other post) the artisan jewelry scene is absolutely thriving.
