I am lucky that I get to spend summers on the Cape. Even luckier that I work from home, which means I can work at the beach, on the sofa, or if the weather is just right, on the patio.

We have a couple of really solid teak chaise lounge chairs that we bought years ago when we lived in D.C., which have held up beautifully. But the hunter green umbrella and navy cushions, never looked quite right, so I took this opportunity from Wayfair to update the outdoor patio decor.

The starting point of the new color scheme, is the new turquoise color market umbrella. Our exterior windows are actually this color (for real), so it is a really fun touch.

I swapped out the cushions on the teak chaise lounges for  neutral grey ones. (There’s also an upstairs deck with an old lounge that desperately needed a cushion – we went with a pale green/blue spa color up there.)

Tired of the hard-lined geometric trellis patterned outdoor throw pillows, I opted for more organic shape patterns, as well as global-inspired patterned throw pillows.

Finally, some new planters add structure and color that ties back to the flowers along the rail. Given we’re on the Outer Cape and not California, I didn’t go for the full-on outdoor room thing, with a rug and lights. Because, seriously, thunder storms are just too frequent. It’s trouble enough to drag the cushions indoors.

The patio looks really cheerful. Now, if only the mosquitos would disappear.

Get the Look: 20 Dresses Under $500

It’s the season of graduations, weddings, and cocktail parties out on the patio; you know you’re going to need at least one new summer dress. I always feel much less stressed buying a new dress at the beginning of the season, when there are plenty of sizes and styles, and more importantly, no real stress to find something.

Here are 20 summer dresses, all under $500 (many much less expensive than that), appropriate for celebrating in balmy temps. A number of these summer dresses can be easily dressed up or dressed down, depending on your footwear and accessories. I’ve included a number of silhouettes appropriate for varying body types, and tried to avoid the abundance of flounces that are everywhere this season.

Sale Alert: 42 Summer Shoes from the Nordstrom Half-Yearly Sale

It’s that time again. The (StyleCarrot partner) Nordstrom Half-Yearly Sale during which thousands of items, including over 3,500 pairs of shoes, are discounted up to 40 percent through Sunday, June 4, 2017. That means you have 10 shopping days left, but don’t wait til the last minute because sizes sell out fast.

To make it easier for you, and well, because I like to shop for shoes, I sifted through most of the 3,500 plus sale shoes and distilled the many amazing choices down to just 42 goodies. I tried to include a mix of colors and styles, focusing on  neutrals, though I did through in a few brights. Most are casual daytime looks, but a few heels can play dress up.

While most of my Nordstrom sale shoe picks are summer styles—open toe sandals and plenty of espadrilles, plus a slip on sneaker or two—I also included a smattering of boots, including #7 and #22 Hunter rain boots (because it’s raining today and I desperately need some) and two winter staples—#13 Rachel Comey Mars bootie and #31 Rag & Bone Ashby bootie. Take your pick, but buy one. You will thank me come fall.

I need to make a few other shout-outs. I’m seriously considering the Joie studded bootie for a some fall/winter whimsy. I already own the Dolce Vita Loki Slide, which I actually didn’t include below, but is on sale. It runs seriously wide (go a half size down), but it works fine enough and is super comfortable.

Last year on a press trip to the Vineyard I bought #8 Toms Majorca Perforated Mule which has a chunky, not too high heel. I thought the under $100 price was a bargain, but now at under $55 it’s a no brainer.

I ordered #14 Opening Ceremony Elena Sandal yesterday as a stylish every day sandal when I’m not wearing my incredibly comfortable (but kinda middle aged lady) Skechers slip on sneakers. I also ordered #30 Vince Thalia Sandal thinking it will elevate pretty much any outfit I throw on. I got a pair of distressed marine blue Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Shoreline Low Tops too.

I was a bit indulgent yesterday. But when you see these and start browsing I think you may just have a hard time restraining yourself too. Let me know what you picked!

Get the Look: 25 Modern Lounge Chairs

The one piece of furniture I’ve longed for, lusted after, craved, dreamed of is a very specific modern lounge chair—the Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, preferably in creamy white leather, and I think, a white ash shell, though I also love the palisander and walnut finishes. I suppose it would depend on where it lived. At $6,000, it is definitely a dream.

When I searched for side chairs for our living room, we didn’t have the luxury of considering elongated or flamboyant modern lounge chairs, like the iconic creations of the mid-century masters, such as Arne Jacobsen’s Egg chair or Harry Bertoia’s Bird chair. Instead, I needed much smaller pieces, and actually found a pair of small scale, mid-century modern Danish lounge chairs on eBay.

Get the Look: 21 Modern Brass Pendant Lights

Swapping out mundane hardware for more special styles is an easy upgrade that gives a big return. Opting for brass intensifies the results. Who would have thought that the design world’s sudden penchant for brass, especially brass pendant lights, on the heels of it being considered so utterly bourgeois would have such staying power? Brass accents instantly brighten and freshen a space. Doing brass in the kitchen is big.

Gone are the days of the builder’s brass chandelier over the dining table. There is so much good brass lighting on the market.
