Foodie Friday: Joanne Chang’s Flour Bakery in Harvard Square

If you live in Boston you know Flour Bakery. Pastry chef proprietor Joanne Chang (half of the husband/wife duo Myers & Chang in SoWa and James Beard award winner), just opened her fifth and sixth locations, Harvard Square and Cambridgeport (soft opening was yesterday). The next outpost is coming soon to Dalton Street just behind the Pru.

Designer extraordinaire Alina Wolhardt of Wolf In Sheep Design has been collaborating closely with both Joanne Chang and her husband/business partner Christopher Myers on the trio of new cafés, which are being built by Cafco Construction Management (also responsible for Row 34 and other area hotspots).

Last week Alina sent along these photos of Flour Bakery Harvard Square shot by the ever lovely Joyelle West, along with some design notes. Alina says, “We took a slight departure in terms of design but still maintained the integrity of Flour’s handmade feel.” Let’s have a look.

Joanne Chang's Flour Bakery In Harvard Square

The signature communal table—each Flour Bakery has one— is in the front of the space along the curved window.

The communal table was custom fabricated by Boston-based studo FKIA. The walnut tabletop sits on a vintage Eames table base. Eames molded plastic dowel leg side chairs surround the table. The Tam Tam chandelier by Marset is from SoWa furniture showroom Casa Design.

The playful hex floor tiles meet the concrete with a jagged edge. Alina says, “They act as sort of a guide for the flow of the queue.” The white small hex mosaic wall tiles are also done with a jagged edge. IC Lights S Pendants by Michael Anastassiades for Flos hang over the counter. Cafe tables (you can see one in the background) have Carrara-like Silestone tops and bistro chairs from Casa Design.

The Flour logo cut into the stained, cerused quarter sewn oak millwork of the sandwich counter features an antiqued brass yolk  of Flour logo and have that spilling onto the floor using antiqued brass.

The cement floor tiles are Popham by Ann Sacks. Alina loves their patina.

Just In: Lumens Modern Lighting Sale Going On Now

I seem always to be researching lighting for one situation or another. (Currently I’m choosing lights to brighten up and modernize our Florida condo.) Luckily  sites like Lumens make choosing modern lighting easy, from basic fixtures to on-trend statement lighting. This StyleCarrot affiliate has asked me to create a post on its modern lighting sale, going on now. (This post is sponsored, but I am a devoted Lumens customer.)

The Lumens lighting sale offers 40+ modern lighting brands at up to 40% off.  I’ve combed every lighting category in the sale for my favorite picks for modern chandeliers, modern pendant lights, modern sconces, flush mount fixtures, table lamps, floor lamps, and more, from brands and designers including Artemide, Tom Dixon, Muuto, Sonneman, Flos, and others.

Some of them I have been coveting for years, others I am lucky enough to own. I helped a friend choose #1 for the playroom in her Manhattan apartment and it looks fantastic —clean, curvy lines with some shine. I really wanted to install #3 in our house on the Cape, but had to go with something less expensive; I still love it though. I’m a sucker for anything resembling gray flannel or concrete so #4 is a fun fave (plus I got to visit the Muuto offices on a press trip to Copenhagen).

Speaking of Danish Design, the matte black sconce (#13) by Arne Jacobsen for Louis Poulsen is a longtime classic. And I’d definitely label #7, Tom Dixon’s copper pendant, a newfound classic lighting option. And one more… I included #8—spare brass sconces with a white glass globe— by contemporary lighting design master Michael Anastassiades in a design mockup for my family room makeover (see “related posts” at the bottom). This could be the perfect opportunity to purchase a pair.

Here are my 15  favorite modern lighting styles from the Lumens lighting sale.

Get the Look: 34 Linear Suspension Lights

In addition to wall-to-wall carpet, pink bathroom tile, and misplaced doorways, the Delray Beach condo doesn’t really have overhead lighting—except for one oddly placed linear suspension lighting fixture. If you can get your eyes to focus beyond the nautical fanfare, you’ll see the fixture above the former owner’s dining table. We are changing the layout, so that spot will function as an entry area, probably with a console table and/or bench. (The entry door is to the right of the table.) As I mentioned yesterday, the carpet and fake wood floor will be ripped out, and a plywood floor will run throughout. So, for the purposes of this post, the question is: What to do about replacing that light fixture?

I perused the usual suspects to figure out my options—Lumens, Ylighting, Lightology, Lamps Plus, etc., and found more ceiling lights, including an interesting option I didn’t see on the US ones (#6) on the British site Argos. (And I learned a new term in all this: linear suspension lighting.) I would love to know what kind of light you think would work best. Remember, it will be an entry space, not a dining area. Ideas please!

When choosing a light, be sure to note what kind of bulbs it requires, and if the wattage is bright enough to light your space. A guide to choosing the right GU10 LED or other similar guides light might provide helpful information.

Get the Look: 22 Sconces that Stretch

I’m trying to come up with a spot in my apartment where I could install one of these super long-armed wall lamps. I’m over the industrial factory look (for my own space anyway). I like the bare bones minimal ones and also the Italian vintage styles from the ’50s, though I fear they’re a bit on the whimsical side for me.  I think #15 is my favorite. Maybe in the family room, over the sofa? That room could use a little architectural-like interest. It’s much more practical than an annoying floor lamp.  Many of these are pricey; the style hasn’t been knocked off  in a frenzy by the usual suspects yet, so I didn’t really find any truly “low” options.

Get the Look: 60 Modern Chandeliers and Pendants

If you’re contemplating a statement light fixture in your living room, as I am, hopefully yesterday’s Montage: 47 Living Rooms with Chandeliers & Pendants gave you some ideas. Turns out I made a spur-of-the-moment rug purchase on One King’s Lane yesterday (an incredible David Hicks runner for my stairs), so the chandelier will have to wait. In the meantime, no reason to stop looking, and to really start to think about what will work in terms of size, etc.

Boston interior designer Shellie Donovan left a helpful tip on the StyleCarrot Facebook page: “Remember, measure the drop and visualize the height. The scale has to be correct, too large or small will kill the best piece. You can get flush mount for lower ceilings. ”
