ARTmonday: 6 Scenes from the Beach

It being the end of summer, I thought artwork of scenes from the beach was in order. I quickly (sorry I had to drive back to Boston for a school orientation this morning), pulled together a mishmash of images, in different mediums, with no real rhyme or reason, other than they picture sand and sea, without being basic landscapes. In addition to an Instagram shot of my own, it includes a work by Boston publicist-turned-photographer Sandra Goroff, whose first book, Solitary Soul, will be published this November. I was privy to a sneak peak; it’s full of tons of wonderful, slice of life images of New England life, from laundry in the countryside to teens at a public pool.

ARTmonday: Dana Ellyn and Matt Sesow at AMP

My sister, artist Dana Ellyn, and her artist husband Matt Sesow have a show up in Provincetown! We went to the opening on Friday night at the gallery, AMP Art Market Provincetown. It was a huge success (not that I’d expect anything less), with many paintings having already sold. She mounted her vegan-centric work; we bought the cute little chick (soon to be a nugget). Matt hung his crazy bears and birds, and a collaborative wedding portrait was the centerpiece. I also discovered a few other artists in town. The show’s up for another week, so if you’re on the Outer Cape, be sure to stop by.

ARTmonday: Photos of Girls At Play

If you follow ARTmonday you know I love atmospheric portraits of women. While I’ve blogged about a couple of wonderful photographers who concentrate on photographing children, namely their own, such as Winky Lewis and Kathleen Schwartz, I haven’t yet done a full post of images featuring kids.

In honor of summer, here are photographs of girls at play, including one I just spotted a few minutes ago on Facebook. So nice to have artistic friends! (Sorry Stephen Sheffield that I couldn’t include your guys. I love those FB pics; boys up next!) I love that in this post I was able to mix friends and colleagues with iconic superstars, along with a piece I bought from the SMFA sale last year.

ARTmonday: Judyth Honeycutt Katz at Berta Walker Gallery

Friday night we went to the opening of a group show at the Berta Walker Gallery in Provincetown. My mother-in-law, Judyth Honeycutt Katz, had 11 pieces hanging in the show. Like last year, they hung alongside some of the best artists in Provincetown— Robert Henry, Salvatore Del Deo and Romolo Del Deo. Berta Walker represents some of the best known artists on the Outer Cape, including Paul Resika, Selina Trieff, and Elspeth Halvorsen, Penelope Jencks, Sky Power, and Varujan Boghosian. She always has a few treasures by Hans Hoffman too. The exhibition runs through August 11, so stop by if you’re in Provincetown. This is Judy’s second show; I blogged about the Berta Walker opening last year here.

Judy has masses of amazing work. I should dig through her studio. I spent the last week sleeping in the same building, but alas I was too busy being on vacation. Here are a few photos I took last year, of her pieces that hang in my apartment and her own house.

I think all three paintings are from a trip to the Southwest.

ARTmonday: Laura Letinksy Still Life Photographs

Canadian-born, Chicago-based photographer Laura Letinksy is a master at understated still life photos that celebrate the remnants of meals at a table. At first glance, the pastel colors and sometimes almost abstract forms at inviting. On closer inspection, you see that the subjects have been picked at, pulled apart, and generally abandoned, awaiting cleanup at a later time. Nevertheless, Letinsky’s photos are beautiful.

It’s no surprise that Laura Letinsky has long been intrigued with Dutch-Flemish and Italian still life paintings. In 1997, she started a series of 4″ x 5″ photographs that were experimental elaborations of details from an earlier series about couples. She noticed that they depicted scenes  of meals she had prepared and consumed–after the fact. She describes them as “unexpectedly beautiful tableaux of dirty dishes and messy counter-tops,” noting that the formal arrangements were “almost classical in an art-historical way.” Indeed, there were also “assemblages of completely banal personal details of appetites, habits, and implements.”

Over the years she has continued the project, photographing tables in New Haven, Rome, Berlin, and Chicago. Rather than romanticizing the gorgeousness of uneaten food, she is “curious about those domestic objects and spaces that are touched, devoured, and discarded.”

Letinsky, who received her M.F.A from Yale in 1991 is a professor at the University of Chicago. She is represented in NYC by the Yancey Richardson Gallery, and other fine galleries around the world. Here is a sampling of her work, starting with a piece from 2009, going back to a 1998 work.
