ARTmonday: 13 Photographs from Lumitrix

There’s a new online gallery that deals exclusively in contemporary photography—Lumitrix. Each print offered is a limited edition and retails at $80 ($220 framed). The London-based  gallery currently represents just 13 photographers, but each is brilliant. Among them, Matilda Temperley (fashion designer Alice Temperley’s younger sister) focuses on dancers, while 23-year-old artist Kannagi Khanna wows with a series featuring celebrity images juxtaposed against Indian women. Here are some of my Lumitrix favorites.

40 Artworks From the SMFA Art Sale 2013

The SMFA Art Sale kicked off last night with the Medici Night preview bash. I saw so many wonderful pieces. Forgive me for not including the artists’ names here; my camera was low on power and we were short on time. (Also excuse some glare, and bad cropping, due to my snapping photos at an angle.) I tried to provide you with a broad range of works here, including photography, painting, drawing, and collage, with landscape, nudes, portraiture, abstracts, florals and more all represented. Of course, I only too ones I really liked, or think are particularly fun.

If you’re in Boston, you should absolutely stop by. There are some great deals to be had; students work in particular tends to be very reasonably priced, though there are also works by faculty, alumni, and affiliated artists. THe SMFA Art Sale 2013 runs through Sunday, November 24.  10 am–8 pm Thursday–Saturday and   10 am–5 pm Sunday.

We came home with three pieces, one of which is included below. Anyone want to guess which it is?

ARTmonday: 20×200 Is Back!

Periodically I check to see if 20×200 is back online. Recently I was surprised with a splash page, encouraging users to sign up for its “Reboot List.” Lo and behold, I received an email last week that the site is up and running; a version of it anyway. It seems that Jen Bekman is doing business at YouShouldBuyArt.com Looks as though she is selling the same, superbly curated affordable art prints as before, the leftovers even. The home page states that you should snatch up what you like, because works won’t be replenished. Bekman and her team are working on a relaunch for early next year, with “new editions, new artists, and some exciting surprises.” I for one cannot wait. Here are 16 prints tempting prints available right now. Love.

UPDATE: Jen emailed me yesterday to thank me for the post, and relay further info about the site. They will definitely replenish out-of-stock prints; just not until early 2014, which is when they’ll resume releasing new editions as well. (As always, sold out editions are gone for good once they’ve sold out.) And, they’ll be adding new inventory throughout this beta period, so keep checking it. Finally, 20×200.com will once again be the URL, with the transition happening in early 2014 as well.

ARTmonday: 12 Artworks from Uncommon Goods

I discovered Brooklyn-based site Uncommon Goods, which launched back in 1999, when I worked for Store Adore. I perused it all the time, especially for environmentally-conscious and handcrafted gift options. For some reason it had fallen off my radar for a while. They emailed me recently. I learned that the company’s lowest paid worker makes 50 percent above minimum wage—as good a reason as any to start shopping the site again—and that they donate to a number of worthy non-profits, including organizations for women, hunger, and the environment. I was also reminded of its selection of selection of cute gifts, including a whole bunch of whole bunch of personalized gifts, like jewelry, pillows, and books. There’s also affordable artwork. I posted a dozen of my favorite artworks from Uncommon Goods below.

ARTmonday: 23 Bird Artworks

Since I can’t stop looking at the gorgeous trees around here—yellow, red, orange—they’re so autumn perfect, I thought I’d share the little creatures who hang out in them.  I had a bird as a pet growing up. He was a beautiful gray cockatiel with a yellow head and perfect persimmon circles on his cheeks. He imitated the call of a whippoorwill and also whistled  that, “Hey you’re sexy, babe” whistle, which was pretty humorous.
