ARTmonday: Affordable Art Fair New York 2013

It’s back, the Affordable Art Fair New York. As I mentioned back in April, the Affordable Art Fair, which started in 1999, now takes place in 12 cities around the world. Here’s a preview of pieces and other works by artists who will be shown. The Affordable Art Fair runs this Thursday, October 3 to Sunday, October 6. One of these days I hope to attend.

ARTmonday: Photographer Daniel Gordon’s Intensely Colored Still LIfes

Photographs, including the first image below, by Boston-born Daniel Gordon, is part of  the exhibit “Reality Check” at MassArt in Boston, along with Matthew Brandt, the photographer I spotlighted last Monday.  Curated by MassArt’s Lisa Tung, the exhibition, which runs through December 6 in MassArt’s Bakalar & Paine Galleries, features photographs that appear to be digitally altered, but are actually the result of other processes. These works are so colorful they look like acrylic paintings, though they are collage-y type photos. Gordon has a variety of work, and I suspect there will be plenty more to come, as he is young, having graduated from Yale University School of Art in 2005.

His book, Still Lifes, Portraits and Parts ($75) is a limited edition of 1000 and published by Morel Books. There’s a signing this Wednesday, Sept. 25 6-8pm at Dashwood Books, 33 Bond Street, NYC.

ARTmonday: Matthew Brandt’s Lake Photos

I really love these funky landscape photos by Matthew Brandt. He’s an L.A.-based photographer who studied at Cooper Union and UCLA, and has gotten a lot of attention lately. He made last year’s Forbes “Top 30 Under 30 in Art & Design list compiled by Jeffrey Deitch, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and artist Chuck Close. There was also a great article about him in Elle Decor. A number of important museums own his work, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art,  Brooklyn Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Elton John does too. I actually just learned about Matthew Brandt because he’s speaking at MassArt in Boston on Oct. 30.

These images are part of Matthew Bradt’s “Lakes and Reservoirs” series. After shooting his Western landscapes,he heads to the darkroom (a photographer who still uses a darkroom!) to soak prints in water he has collected from those same lakes. A print might bathe for a few days or a few months, and the results vary depending on the length. Some look like traditional landscapes gone awry in the darkroom (or attacked by a bottle of bleach); others have a techno illustrated feel, while others resemble dreamy pastel pieces.

I’m in love, but guessing they’re a bit over my budget. Wah.

ARTmonday: Photos of Girls At Play

If you follow ARTmonday you know I love atmospheric portraits of women. While I’ve blogged about a couple of wonderful photographers who concentrate on photographing children, namely their own, such as Winky Lewis and Kathleen Schwartz, I haven’t yet done a full post of images featuring kids.

In honor of summer, here are photographs of girls at play, including one I just spotted a few minutes ago on Facebook. So nice to have artistic friends! (Sorry Stephen Sheffield that I couldn’t include your guys. I love those FB pics; boys up next!) I love that in this post I was able to mix friends and colleagues with iconic superstars, along with a piece I bought from the SMFA sale last year.

Sunday Bouquet: Still Life with Lily and Stick

Still Life With Lily And Stick Photo

Still Life with Lily and Stick, 2013

I usually put long clippings of stiff beach grass that I cut from our yard, in this vase. It’s up on our green concrete mantle. The cat is constantly trying to gnaw on it. He wasn’t quite as interested in the lily, also plucked from the garden. I leaned this stuck, which is actually over five-feet-tall, found on the beach, in front, to make it harder for him to get to. Indeed, since the mantle is slippery and narrow, he fell off. Poor kitty. Nice photo though.
