ARTmonday: Winter Works Show at Bromfield Gallery

Over the weekend I went to First Friday in SoWa, an arts district in Boston.  Mainly I went to meet Sydney Licht, who was in town for her solo show “Canned and Contained,” beautiful contemporary still life paintings at Chase Young Gallery, a top Boston art gallery.  The works are wonderful, and  gallery co-owner Sarah Young is so lovely.

I wandered through a number of other galleries, including Bromfield Gallery which has a very appealing (and crowded) exhibition called Winter Works. It’s a  juried show with lots of small pieces by many artists, all priced from $100 to $1,000. (There are many affordable artworks here.) There were several I was very tempted to purchase, and I may go back for at least one. These are perfect holiday gifts. All the pieces are worth a look and there are enough styles ad mediums (abstract & still life, collage & encaustic) to suit many different types.

Here are 32 artworks from Boston art gallery Bromfield Gallery’s Winter Works show.

ARTmonday: Lindsey Kocur’s Colorful Architectural Paintings

Boston area artist Lindsey Kocur explores interior and exterior landscapes in graphic architectural paintings. These mixed media works were part of her MFA thesis “Interiority Complex,” exhibited when she graduated from Tufts University in partnership with the School of Museum of Fine Arts. (I actually discovered Kocur’s work at the SMFA Art Sale in 2012).

She says about her work, “Elements of idealistic contemporary living spaces blend with references to past architectural movements to highlight social issues surrounding structural design that persist today.” Kocur sources highly staged images online and from magazines. Her hope is that her hand-painted boards “reveal a human quality” as juxtaposed against the glossy, flawless interior photography.

Several of Kocur’s architectural paintings and drawings is currently on display (until this Thursday, April 24th) in “Prompt” at 13 Forest Gallery on Mass. Ave. in Arlington. The gallery also carries a fantastic selection of gorgeous handmade jewelry by Boston designers and others, as well as those lovely ceramic birds by Cathy Moynihan I featured in December.

ARTmonday: Jaime C. Knight and Lena Wolff

I’ve been hanging on to these mixed media works by artists Jaime C. Knight and Lena Wolff since last year (I probably discovered them on The Jealous Curator). This bright and clear summer day seemed like the perfect time to post them. Knight is a grad student at the University of Iowa studying printmaking, and Wolff earned a degree in printmaking at San Francisco State University back is 2003. They showed together at Lake Gallery at San Francisco. First Came Love, which also blogged about the pieces, included a statement from Wolff about the exhibit:

“In the Beginning” features a body of new work and collaborations made by Jaime Knight and I in 2010. Leading up to the show, Jaime and I shared a studio space and worked in response to each other both on individual and jointly made pieces that communicate back and forth in a symbolic narrative. The exhibit includes paper collages, graphite drawings and a light sculpture which draw upon existing and imagined creation myths. Working with elements of light, reflection and patterns of layered collage using a palette of whites, graphite gray and an array of metallic and iridescent surfaces, the work depicts biomorphic mountains, the force of a comet, a haunting tree of life and clusters of expansive constellations.”
