ARTmonday: Ky Anderson’s Contemporary Artwork

Ky Anderson is a Greenpoint, Brooklyn-based abstract artist represented by one of my favorite galleries, Kathryn Markel Fine Arts. The gallery has outposts in New York City and Bridgehampton, and while I’ve never actually been to either, I often peruse the website and am a huge fan of many of the artists it represents, including Sydney Licht, whose pale pastel abstract still lifes are endlessly appealing.

Anderson, who was born in Kansas City and graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1995, creates abstract paintings in acrylic and ink on paper (both found paper and new), and more recently, in oil on canvas. The colors are soft and the shapes simple and bold, often scaffolded with inky lines.

Anderson founded DUSK, through which she works with artists from all over to develop handmade editions and curate original series. She has a small printmaking shop in Greenpoint and welcomes nearby artists to use the press. She’s curating a DUSK show for this summer.

In addition, Anderson features her own art collection in a tumblr on her site. According to an interview she did with Got a Girl Crush, she started her art collection blog in order to “document and appreciate the artwork I live with and to encourage art collecting.” (I think I should document my personal art collection in a separate tab here on StyleCarrot. Yes?)

Anderson adds, “Not all art is expensive and I like to tell stories about how the work came into my hands to show that you don’t have to have a lot of money to grow a collection.” Absolutely. In fact, Jen Bekman offers five prints f Ky Anderson’s abstract paintings on 20×200, starting at $24.

Here is a sampling of some of my favorite abstract paintings by Ky Anderson. Those colors… Girl crush indeed.

ARTmonday: 16 Pieces of Sports Artwork

Ok, so first #PatsNation #WeWon #Phew. I watched the Patriots/Seahawks Superbowl game last night, obviously. Or at least the half time show. (Dancing sharks?) Actually, I watched the second half of the game (half watched as I sourced these sports artworks). I was a little bit worried about my son, who takes all things Patriots very seriously. Even the phone call canceling school didn’t get a cheer. But the Patriots pulled it off again. So, yay. But boo to the snow day.

Here are 16 sports artworks, covering one angle or another of skiing, fishing, swimming, sailing, ice hockey, volleyball, ostrich racing (huh?), surfing, tennis, cycling, cheerleading, football, golf, and boxing. Now bundle up and go sledding.

ARTmonday: 16 Obscured Cityscapes

As much as we love spending time in our little Florida enclave, surrounded by palm trees and ocean air, there is always something exhilarating about zipping back into the city on the Uber ride back from the airport. Sure, it’s not Manhattan (for one, it only takes ten minutes to travel from Logan to downtown Boston), but there are still bridges, and lights, a river, and a tall building or two in the Boston cityscape. It’s nice to escape to other environs, but urban landscapes are really where I prefer to be long term.

Taking inspiration from the cityscape with which we were met as we arrived home the other evening, I’ve pulled together cityscape artwork, but not straightforward postcard images (ick). No sunsets behind skyscrapers here. This cityscape art portrays views that are deconstructed or somehow obscured. It might be a scene enhanced by a reflection, shot from above, viewed from beneath a bridge or through a window, or made blurry by the rain or the photographic lens. Here are 16 pieces of cityscape art that celebrates the city, no matter which way it’s looked at.

ARTmonday: Misty Landscapes

Misty landscape photography seems to combine the dewy feel of the heat and the starkness of the wintertime, to me anyway. I love a desolate winter landscape photo. Since I’m in a Florida for a few days, I was also drawn to a few of these other images which are tinged with a Southern feel. Here are misty landscapes, from fields, to woods, to mountains, to sea.

ARTmonday: 20 Fun Food Artworks

With all the food art I perused to put together last week’s 20 Autumnal Artworks in honor of Thanksgiving along with the post I did for Matouk, Appreciating Autumn Through Art, I noticed there were quite a few examples of humorous, fun food artworks. You may not want to eat anything after this weekend, but there’s no harm in looking. Some of it may even inspire you to try snapping fun food artworks yourself, at least on Instagram.
