ARTmonday: Masquerade-Themed Artworks

I’ve never been to a true masquerade ball. The closest I came is a school fundraising auction I chaired with a Carnivale theme. I have a cute photo of myself and my friend/co-chair, artist Lee Essex Doyle (you can see her Venetian interiors here), but I can’t find it right now. She invited me to a Save Venice masquerade ball, but we skipped it. Oh well, there went my chance.

I started noticing a lot of photography featuring people with elaborate rubber animal masks, which I’ve been putting aside for a later post. Enjoy these masquerade themed artworks; perhaps you’ll find inspiration for your own year-end celebration.

ARTmonday: 40 Artworks at the SMFA Art Sale 2015

The SMFA Art Sale 2015 opens to the public tomorrow morning. I attended the Medici Night party last night and had a great time browsing art and catching up with artists, acquaintances, and friends. With my new curation business underway, I was more conscientious about photographing not just the art but the signage as well. I missed a few, but for the most part am able to identify most of the pieces.

I stuck to a tighter budget this year, but came home with two pieces I love, which I can definitely classify as affordable artwork. Both are photographs by current SMFA students and I plan on hanging them together. I included one of them below. See if you can guess which one it is.

As always, proceeds from the SMFA Art Sale benefits student scholarships. There are pieces by established alumni, faculty, and also current students. The arrays on the walls change throughout the day, and you can always find more in the bins. Stop by this weekend; art makes way better holiday presents than cashmere sweaters.

SMA Art Sale 2015: Thursday, November 19 (10 am–8 pm)—opening celebration from 5–8 pm;  Friday, November 20 (10 am–8 pm); Saturday, November 21 (10 am–8 pm); Sunday, November 22 (10 am–5 pm).

ARTmonday: Photography from Tappan Collective

Yesterday morning I was catching up on my Pinterest boards when I came across this crisp bedroom designed by L.A. based designer Amber Lewis of Amber Interiors. I love the sapare design and mix of white, charcoal and wood, but what really caught my eye was the misty landscape photo (affordable artwork I suspected/hoped) tinged in pink. (Clearly I’m still stuck on my blush and charcoal color palette.)  The photo was handily captioned, crediting this statement photo to Brian Merriam.

Brian Merriam is a self-taught, Brooklyn-based photographer whose prints are sold though Tappan Collective. Founded by two young Los Angeles natives, Chelsea Neman and Jordan Klein who met at the University of Michigan, Tappan Collective is yet another great source for affordable artwork. I explored the photography section and came up with these 14 images that are thoroughly appealing. Eight of them are photographic portraits of partially obscured women. A pretty good match for my taste I’d say.

ARTmonday: 8 Affordable Artworks from the Minted Summer 2015 Collection

As anyone who reads my blog knows I have a a great love affair with art. Other women buy shoes, I come home with art. (Longer shelf life, and often less expensive these days). In addition to supporting local organizations like the School of Museum of Fine Arts and MassArt in Boston, and Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill and Provincetown Art Association & Museum in the summertime, I pick up a lot of appealing affordable artwork from sites like 20×200 and StyleCarrot partner Minted.

You are likely familiar with Minted for its invitations, but they have quite the selection of affordable limited edition art prints as well. There’s even a crowd-sourcing function where you can vote on how much you like the designs that I may be a tiny bit obsessed with. The Minted Summer 2015 Collection is full of colorful affordable art prints by emerging artists that you can purchase framed or unframed. I picked my 8 favorites here, including the framed print they sent which looks cute on the art shelf above my desk.

Joni Tyrell, Pining for Pineapple from Minted’s Summer 2015 Collection
I love the way this framed pineapple still life photo from Minted looks on the shelf above my desk in Boston, especially beside the little Grass Vase by Normann Copenhagen. I shot this one for my Instagram, but I’ll take others and post when I’m back home this fall. Minted’s Instagram is worth a follow too with tons of cute affordable art in pretty interiors and and stationary vignettes.

Jaime Derringer Design Milk Art Available At Minted

I used to work for Jaime Derringer on her contemporary design site Design Milk. So of course, I had to have on of her original watercolors, which I hung in our Florida condo. It’s the drippy vertical abstract in the middle. Here’s what she’s got for sale on Minted.

ARTmonday: 12 Orphaned Artworks from OODE

Two years ago I did an interview with Marleen Kurvers, stylist and proprietor of Dutch Design Year, a design shop in Amsterdam.  Her most recent venture is GALERIE OODE, also in Amsterdam. Kurvers offers a curated selection of orphaned artworksartwork that was left in storage because the museums that owned it closed. Kurvers says, “We want to bring them back to the public so people can adopt them!”

This OODE  is exhibiting the work of Jan de Mug, a Dutch graphic designer and painter from Den Bosch. His work from the Foundation of Disinherited Goods/ Onterfd Goed are abstract, minimalistic paintings and drawings. I know a lot of people who are visiting Amsterdam this summer, so make a point to stop by Galerie Oode to see the orphaned artworks and say hi to Kurvers.

I’ve included one here along with other pieces of orphaned artworks from OODE.
