ARTmonday: Millee Tibbs’ Folded Landscape Photos

I don’t remember where I first saw these crumpled landscape photos by Detroit-based artist Millee Tibbs, but I’ve been holding on to the images for a while. Although I’m not often a fan of straightforward landscapes, I’m drawn to abstracted landscapes. Or, in this case, folded landscapes.

Tibbs is interested in the relationship between surfaces and what lies beneath them, along with the space where its qualities contradict each other while simultaneously coexisting. This series is called Mountains + Valleys after the two primary folds in origami.

After photographing the landscapes, Tibbs prints, folds, then re-photographs them, resulting in images that are both manipulated and photographically real.

In her statement Tibbs says that images of the American West are used to interpret and confront cultural myths that are disseminated through the representation of that landscape. And that the work uses physical alteration to create relationships between formal geometries and natural spaces that question the illusionistic representation of the photographic image.

Here are eight of Millee Tibbs’ folded, abstracted landscapes.

Foodie Friday: Dry Line Artisanal Gin

On Tuesday night I attended the launch of Dry Line Cape Cod Gin at Outlook Kitchen in the Envoy Hotel on the Boston Waterfront. Although it’s hard to get me to an event, there was no way I’d miss this.

Dry Line Gin is crafted by South Hollow Spirits at the Truro Vineyards. I spend many summer afternoons on the lawn enjoying lunch from the food truck Crush Pad. (They also produce Twenty Boat Rum, which you may have spotted on my bar tray.)

Dry Line Cape Cod Gin Distilled With Peppercorns

South Hollow Spirits is the Cape’s first craft distillery since Prohibition. Dry Line Cape Cod Gin is a small batch, twice-distilled spirit made from organic sugar cane juice that is fermented for three weeks. After the first distillation, the gin is moved to steel drums to steep for 48 hours with botanical-filled hemp bags.

The botanicals used to distill Dry Line include Eastern Red Cedar juniper berries (sourced on their own property), orange peel, lemon peel, cardamom, allspice, coriander, orris root, grains of paradise, angelica root, anise, and dried cranberry. The spirits absorb essential oils from these botanicals, then redistilled, and brought to 94 proof.

Dry Line Cape Cod Gin Bottle + Launch Party Invite

Local graphic designer, who also used to own Farm Gallery, Susie Nielsen, designed the bottle and labeling, which is exquisite. Here are images from the launch party on Tuesday. Everything was delicious, including the four gin drinks served. (No, I did not drink them all.)

Dry Line Cape Cod Gin Launch At Outlook Kitchen + Bar

We were seated in a private dining room with a glass wall to the kitchen. I was lucky enough to sit between Kristin Roberts and Dave Roberts Jr. (head distiller). It’s a family business. Their dad was there too.

Dry Line Cape Cod Gin Boston Tea Party Cocktail

The arugula and pear salad was served with the Boston Tea Party Cocktail made with Dry Line gin, peppermint lemon infused tea, lemon juice, muddled strawberries, and basil. My favorite. (Please serve this at the Truro Vineyards drink shack this summer!)

Dry Line Cape Cod Gin Party At Outlook Kitchen + Bar

Tagliatelle pasta with onion puree, cherry tomatoes, peas, spinach, and Grana Padano.  Served with SeaPORT Martini made with Dry Line gin infused with citrus, pink & black peppercorns, and port. (Sorry I didn’t take a photo of that one, which was actually too strong for my sensitive self.)

Dry Line Cape Cod Gin Launch Party Menu At Outlook Kitchen + Bar

The evening’s menu. (Oyster shell from last month’s Timberland dinner at Row 34, but hey, it’s Cape Cod appropriate.)

Dry Line Cape Cod Gin Bee's Knees Cocktail

Lemon tart made with Meyer lemon curd, meringue, and mint for dessert. Served with Bee’s Knees cocktail: Dry Line gin, lemon juice, honey syrup.

ARTmonday: 10 Pieces from Art in Giving

Hilary Tait Norod, a talented up and coming artist with whom I collaborate in the Webster Art Project told me about a charitable endeavor she is supporting called Art in Giving. The foundation, based in Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood, raises funds for childhood cancer research.

More than 60 artists and galleries participate in Art in Giving, donating up to 50 percent of the proceeds from the sale of art to The Rachel Molly Markoff Foundation. Its mission is dedicated to pediatric cancer research and programs to help families cope with childhood cancer.

While individuals are welcome to purchase these pieces, the organization targets art buyers, real estate developers, architects and interior designers, and others who might place art in public buildings and corporate offices. In some cases pieces hang in institutions and are still for sale. Gift certificates are also available.

Here are ten artworks from Art in Giving that I particularly love.

Happy Mother’s Day

The Song Of The Old Mother
I RISE in the dawn, and I kneel and blow
Till the seed of the fire flicker and glow;
And then I must scrub and bake and sweep
Till stars are beginning to blink and peep;
And the young lie long and dream in their bed
Of the matching of ribbons for bosom and head,
And their ~y goes over in idleness,
And they sigh if the wind but lift a tress:
While I must work because I am old,
And the seed of the fire gets feeble and cold.
—William Butler Yeats

Just In: Join Me at the Northshore Mall

The Boston Globe asked me to speak this Thursday, May 5, 2016 in the Women to Watch series they are sponsoring with Simon Malls about women in the workplace. The topic is “Design Your Life to Your Advantage.”

We’ll touch on women’s work topics such as work/life balance (I’m the poster child, right? Blogging at ten o’clock at night), transitioning back to the workplace after maternity or other types of leave, switching career paths, and the like.

I’m not usually inclined to get up in front of an audience (despite my career as a high school cheerleader), but this is a panel of two—interior designer Beth Bourque is joining me—moderated by Boston Globe real estate editor, who I really love.

If you can come I’d love to see you.

6—6:45PM  Networking reception • Nordstrom, Upper Level
6:50—7:30PM  Discussion • Nordstrom Court, Lower Level
