Get the Look: 25 Modern Lounge Chairs

The one piece of furniture I’ve longed for, lusted after, craved, dreamed of is a very specific modern lounge chair—the Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, preferably in creamy white leather, and I think, a white ash shell, though I also love the palisander and walnut finishes. I suppose it would depend on where it lived. At $6,000, it is definitely a dream.

(If you’re in the market, the 15% off Herman Miller sale just started at StyleCarrot partner sites DWR and YLiving. In addition to the modern lounge, you can stock up on Eames fiberglass side chairs and swag leg desk; George Nelson slatted bench, bubble lamps, and that Marshmallow sofa; the Aeron desk chair; and more.)

When I searched for side chairs for our living room, we didn’t have the luxury of considering elongated or flamboyant modern lounge chairs, like the iconic creations of the mid-century masters, such as Arne Jacobsen’s Egg chair or Harry Bertoia’s Bird chair. Instead, I needed much smaller pieces, and actually found a pair of small scale, mid-century modern Danish lounge chairs on eBay.

Still, I can’t help imagining life with an Eames lounge. I love the Jens Risom too, which is much more reasonably scaled. Here are 25 modern lounge chairs from StyleCarrot partners in all sorts of colors, shapes, and sizes, as well as a variety of price points.

ARTmonday: Miniatures at the Cambridge Art Association (A Juried Show by StyleCarrot)

I really hope you can make it to see the “Miniatures” show at the Cambridge Art Association before it closes on Saturday. Not just because there are many wonderful (and very affordable) little works, but because I juried it!

I was thrilled when artist Cory Shea, who is Cambridge Art Association‘s associate director, asked me to be a jury of one for the small works show this spring. I first met Cory over coffee to a ask her about showing her photos at the Art + Cocktails pop-up gallery I put together in Truro last summer. (I had seen Cory’s work at the MassArt auction earlier that year and fell in love.)

I had such a good time choosing the pieces. When I came in, Erin Becker, CAA’s esteemed director and Cory had the 150 pieces laid out and waiting. The process was blind, so I didn’t know the artists’ names, though I admittedly recognized a few. I chose about 60 or so, and later that week Cory hung them. Beautifully. It was a really fun process, and I hope I’ll have the opportunity to do something like this again.

Many of the pieces I’d love to bring home. (As Cory knew when she asked me to jury the show, I have a weakness for small works.) I purchased Hilary Tait Norod’s triptych that morning, and yesterday when my husband went to see the show he bought Giacometti’s Giraffe.

Please stop in if you have a few minutes and let me know what you think. You can follow CAA on Instagram @cambridgeart and my art feed @stylecarrotcurates.

“Miniatures” through Saturday, May 6, 2017 at the Cambridge Art Association (25R Lowell Street just off Mount Auburn Street across from the hospital, Cambridge, Mass.)

ARTmonday: Modern Sculpture Garden in Japan

With our delayed flight on Sunday (hung out in the San Francisco airport for 8 hours after flying in from Osaka), and adjusting back to Boston life, this post about the sculpture garden called the Hakone Open-Air Museum is a few days delayed. But no less fantastic. I loved exploring Tokyo and Kyoto, but in terms of actual sights, this was by far my favorite.

The Hakone Open-Air Museum opened in 1969 as the first open-air art museum in Japan. I wasn’t sure what “open-air” meant, but quickly discovered it is a vast sculpture garden. There are also four indoor exhibition halls though I didn’t have time to see any of those.

The museum’s collections include about 100 sculptures by both Asian and Western artists including Rodin, Miro, and Moore. In fact, I believe I read that the Hakone Open-Air Museum has the largest collection of Henry Moore sculptures in the world.

The museum is also known for its hot springs-fed foot bath. (Hakone is a resort town famous for its hot springs.) It was my first introduction to the Japanese foot bath, and sublime.

Here are some of my favorite pieces from my afternoon at the Hakone Open-Air Museum last week.

ARTmonday: Colorful Abstract Art Exhibit Featuring Ellen Levine Dodd and More

I’ve been blogging about abstract painter Ellen Levine Dodd since I met her almost three years ago on the Cape. She’s been part of my collaboration with Webster & Company #WebsterArtProject and my pop-up cocktail gallery.

Her work is in an exhibit in Danville, near San Francisco, called Color Play at The Town of Danville Art Gallery through April 15, 2017. Color Play features work by five abstract artists who work in gorgeous color, some vibrant, some more subdued: Ellen Levine Dodd, Karen Olsen-Dunn, Sharon Paster, Elise Morris, and Julia Rymer. They’re all fitting for this glorious spring day!

Follow these artists on Instagram for a peek into their studios and most current work: Ellen Levine Dodd; Karen Olsen-Dunn; Sharon PasterElise MorrisJulia Rymer. And be sure to follow my art-only IG account @StyleCarrotCurates too.
