For this season’s Style issue of the Boston Globe Magazine, in addition to a few profiles of Boston’s Most Stylish (friend and art/science documentary producer Alberta Chu, jewelry designer/computer scientist Jessica Rosencrantz of Nervous System, and Deborah Z. Porter Founder and Executive Director of the Boston Book Festival), I also wrote “Jewelry’s Big Moment.” The spread includes nine pieces from wonderful, emerging local jewelry designers. With Mass Art and the SMFA in town, (not to mention RISD in nearby Providence, but that’s a whole other post) the artisan jewelry scene is absolutely thriving. I have a storage bin problem—I have so many that I need storage bins for my storage bins. Ridiculous. That said, I’m not really a woven basket person. I can appreciate the art, but I’m not really into them. I have noticed, however, in the last couple of years, that superior examples have been in the spotlight. (Obviously Pier 1’s inventory is forever strong.) With the emphasis on fair trade, back-to-basics, artisans, and the craft renaissance, they’ve been more prominent from a design angle. Interestingly, although they are artsy, they sometimes go hand-in-hand with the industrial aesthetic, as the raw and rustic intersect. I put Montage: 54 Living Rooms with Gray Sofas together last summer, but never provided a shopping guide. I created the roundup when I started to work on my friend Meredith’s NYC condo. We did it all remotely, and I haven’t even seen it yet, but she recently sent me a photograph and I’m happy to report that it looks really good, especially the living room, for which we spent a lot of time looking at modern grey sofas. We wanted one that looked great but was still plenty comfortable.
We used a gray sofa with clean lines, the Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Nicholas sofa along with turquoise Addison chairs by Jonathan Adler, a tufted wool rug by Angela Adams, and a mirrored console she purchased years ago from Horchow.

Here’s your companion shopping guide to yesterday’s Montage: 30 Bathroom Vanities. As always, I’ve trolled the Interwebs so you don’t have to, pulling 28 mostly modern bathroom vanities. The items range in price from a compact $99 IKEA model to a pricey glam piece by Burgbad, a company I’d actually never heard of. Most hover around $1K though, give or take, so don’t be scared off! I hope there’s enough variety here; most of the available images were in situ, rather than straightforward product shots.
But more importantly, did anyone have any ideas for my countertop? If we paint the actual vanity glossy white and change the knobs, what should we do for the countertop? And sink? I’m inclined to opt for a simple undermount, but looks like the bowls resting on top are still in favor. Probably better to stick to a classic though, right? Especially since it’s just a white tile bathroom. We do need to deal with the floor though too. White penny tile or glass mosaic? Input please!
