Get the Look: 20 Rustic Reclaimed Wood Beds

Yesterday’s Design Diary, “Hutker Architects Goes Graphic On Martha’s Vineyard,” featured an airy, pale blue master bedroom with a cathedral ceiling that the homeowners furnished with amazing reclaimed furniture that can be found on some of my favorite partner sites. For instance, this simple platform-style reclaimed wood bed and plank-front reclaimed pine nightstand that they ordered from the Sundance Catalog.

The rustic style wood pieces work particularly well in that bedroom because they help bridge the outdoor space of the deck with the interior. The bold graphic rug reiterates the clean, modern design, providing a satisfying juxtaposition of texture and style.

Today I’ve pulled together a collection of 20 reclaimed wood beds with a rustic feel, most created from actual reclaimed wood (though a few are just executed in a reclaimed woods style.) The sources range from well-known favorites that include West Elm and Crate & Barrel, some popular e-retailers, such as Burke Decor, a great site that sells amazing consignment pieces, called Chairish, and a couple of well-priced English sites, like FurniturePlus, for those abroad.

Get the Look: Every Type of Birkenstock Sandal

After putting together Friday’s post on the revival of Birkenstocks, and having a late birthday lunch with friends (thanks Marcie & Deb!), I headed to The Tannery to try on Birkenstocks. As they’re hardly sexy, I felt like I was trying on shoes that an college roommate left by the door. But, once I channeled the women in all the street style photos, I was on board. So I turned my attention to how Birkenstocks actually felt on my feet.

The leather of the Arizona sandals were a little stiff for me, (though seems to be fine for everybody else), and I didn’t even bother trying on the Gizeh thongs  because I can only wear flip flops with ribbons, not leather, between my toes. (Princess and the Pea, me.)  It’s too bad, because I really like the white Arizona Birkenstocks. They remind me of my white rubber platforms slides by Patrick Cox from the mid-’90s (which I actually still have and should perhaps resurrect).

The white Birkenstocks are so obviously a cute style statement and would not be mistaken for the schleppy misguidedness. Look, if you’re going to wear Birkenstocks because they’re back (and by back I mean, by those who matter, i.e., Phoebe Philo, Marc Jacobs, Jenna Lyons), then you’re going to have to cultivate the total look. (I can do a post with specific clothing picks too if anyone’s interested.)

Back to the try-ons. I also slipped on a slouchy pair of suede Arizona sandals labeled “soft footbed.” Bingo. Pure comfort. (For sizing, go down one.) I could definitely get on board wearing these. Thing is, I haven’t been into earth tones the past ten years.

Back home, my search for size 36 black suede Arizonas turned up “out of stock” messages. Not willing to languish on a wait list, I ordered the Arizona Soft Footbed Suede Sandal in Velvet Gray . Admittedly, it is going to be harder to pull off elegance in gray suede than crisp black, but so be it. Besides, I’ve been totally into my gray Madewell jeans, so this could all be good.

I’m headed to the Outer Cape for most of the summer, where looking just-so is just not.

I’ve updated the shopping options below on June 2021. I also just bought a new pair of shearling-lined Birkenstocksshearling-lined Birkenstocks that are irresistibly cozy, especially on chilly Cape nights.

Get the Look: 22 Men’s Watches

We seem to go through a lot of watches at our house. I still have my prized Cartier (thank goodness; I’d be crushed if I lost it…too expensive to replace), but oftentimes, especially in summer, I just like to throw on a Timex with a stretchy metal elastic bracelet. (I wear it to the movies too; Indiglo rocks.) Unfortunately, the batteries don’t last very long. At least mine don’t. I’ve taken to treating them as disposable, which is of course ridiculous.

My husband also favors a Timex. For him it’s a plain white face with black numbers and black (imitation?) leather strap. I’ve tried to buy him nicer watches, but he protests. I think I did finally get him to wear a similar style, slightly upgraded, but he does so begrudgingly. He loses them, which I don’t really get since he’s generally pretty organized. But whatever, not my problem. My son loses his watches too, which is my problem, but he just bought himself an expensive Swatch, so we’ll see.

I love wandering through watch stores, whether its Tourneau in Boston, Cartier in New York, or Wempe in London. (Admittedly, if there’s also jewelry I tend to get sidetracked by the diamonds.)

I did a roundup of 15 stainless steel watches for women in March, but with Father’s Day upon us, I thought it would be a good time to pull together a variety of men’s watches too. As with Mother’s Day, we don’t really observe Father’s Day either. (We’re equal opportunity holiday ignorers.) I kind of ignored my husband’s birthday this year too, which I wasn’t all that nice (but he didn’t want to go anywhere, do anything, or want anything), so he deserves some recognition. Obviously, not a watch.

Here are 22 men’s watches, from sporty to sleek from StyleCarrot partners.

Get the Look: 20 Modern Outdoor Planters

We have two bluestone patios right outside our house on the Cape; one in the front, and a smaller one in the back. The back one faces a little rose garden, meant to echo the larger rose garden “up the hill,” as we say, at my in laws house. Theirs was planted in honor of my husband’s grandmother, Florine. Unlike the front garden, in which I only allow white and blue/purple flowers (yes, the guy who plants the flowers and helps weed thinks I’m crazy), the back garden has yellow roses, coral roses, and violet roses. (I had the pink ones replanted at my in laws because the color was annoying me.)

I had always planned to do low, long modern planters on the perimeter of the bluestone patio in the back, which is outside the guest rooms. Instead, that patio is sad and deserted (except for the roses, of course). My brother-in-law is getting married in Provincetown this summer (to a woman, just in case you’re wondering, given the locale), and much of the bride’s family will be staying at the house. This has motivated me to once again start thinking about enhancing the patios with modern planters.

While the funky, colorful ones are fun, they’re not really right. We’ll need minimalist planters with clean lines, planted with architectural forms, I think. No floppy pink pansies in terracotta troughs allowed. I’m thinking succulents and spiky grasses. I already grow some herbs in a vegetable garden (with our lone vegetable—or fruit rather—cherry tomatoes).

As for the front patio, given the lounge chairs and the view, we’re all set. Maybe the entry porch could use a pair of medium-sized planters as a welcome. Maybe brightly colored, planters could work there. Of course I’ll have to order all of this online; local garden shops only carry the usual traditional style planters. Yawn.

Here are 20 modern outdoor planters, most of which will work indoors too.

Swatching: Bathroom Floor Tiles

We’ve been enjoying the Florida condo immensely. Last weekend, the painter started, and I’ve signed the contract to have very cool (and inexpensive) cork floor tiles put in throughout. Except in the bathrooms. One bathroom is remaining in its pink tile and flamingo wallpaper glory. But the master bath is getting a simple upgrade. (There’s a before photo at the end of this post.)

I’ve already had the pink wall tile and pink tub re-glazed in white. The wallpaper was removed this week, and the walls painted white. The vanity cabinet will be painted white too, and be treated to new brushed chrome knobs from IKEA. The countertop is pink Formica, with an overmount pink sink and awful cheap faucets. I don’t have a plan for that yet. (I’m thinking of tiling the counter since stone is way too expensive.)

Meanwhile, the floor is an easy fix. The pink floor tiles must go! I think they’ll even be able to tile right over them, which will save money. I looked around for inspiration, including Waterworks, Urban Archaeology, ABL Tile & Bathroom Centre, Overstock.comHome Depot, and of course Pinterest.

I might just do a plain white penny tile on the floor. We have that in the boys bathroom and laundry room on the Cape, and I love it. Or, something in an airy green. Here are 22 blue, green, and white tiles that caught my eye, along with my thoughts. Feel free to chime in.

Bathroom Floor Glass Tiles InBlue

Interesting mix of materials (metal, concrete, glass), but too busy.

Bathroom Floor Pebble Tiles In White & Blue

Adore these flat ocean pebbles, but won’t work with the overall Scandinavian decor.

Screen Shot 2014-05-03 at 11.43.47 AM

Simple gray penny tile—total contender.

Screen Shot 2014-05-03 at 11.45.43 AM

Love the color palette, but a basketweave tile pattern is too traditional.

Screen Shot 2014-05-03 at 11.48.47 AM

Love these skinny gary horizontal tiles. Is the shape too on trend/contemporary?

Screen Shot 2014-05-03 at 12.06.26 PM

Dreamy colors. Definitely a possibility. Possibly perfect.

Screen Shot 2014-05-03 at 12.06.34 PM

Three-dimensional pattern in green concrete. Would work well with plain white tile. Too design-y?

Screen Shot 2014-05-03 at 11.40.28 AM

Gray, clear and white in a mix of materials. Maybe?

Screen Shot 2014-05-03 at 11.40.42 AM

Green and blue glass is fresh and pretty. Too right now? Too sleek? Too slippery for the floor?

Screen Shot 2014-05-03 at 11.42.39 AM

Pretty penny tile in ombre, but the lavender hues are annoying.

Screen Shot 2014-05-03 at 11.42.50 AM

Basic white penny tile. These are kind of small, and marble; I’m thinking glossy porcelain.

Screen Shot 2014-05-03 at 11.43.08 AM

The rest of the condo flooring will be cork. Should the bathroom be cork too?

blue-penny-tile

I’m so attracted to the blues, but really I want the bathroom to be green.

emerald-green-penny-tile

Emerald green penny tile. Intense.

mint-green-penny-tile-

Green penny tile. Perfect.

robins-egg-blue-bathroom-tile

More blues.

oval-bathroom-tile

Oval white tile. Fresh clean but not too modern.

organic-white-bathroom-tile-

Organic white tile. Very pretty, but maybe too fashion-y for such a basic bathroom.

mixed-green-penny-tile

This is fun. Blue, white, and green together.

bathroom-tile-green-mosaic-porcelain

Nah. Too kid-like.

jade-green-penny-tile

Beautiful deep celadon green.
pale-green-penny-tile

Also love this lighter cleadon green penny tile. Lighter, fresher, better with plain white.
