ARTmonday: The Sydney and Walda Bestoff Sculpture Garden at the New Orleans Museum of Art

This weekend we went to a wonderful wedding in New Orleans. The reception was held in the New Orleans Museum of Art. The museum was open, so we had a chance to see paintings by Thomas Eakins, Monet, and Dutch masters, Chinese pottery, carvings from Easter Island, Louis Comfort Tiffany perfume bottles, and beaded African masks.

The ceremony was held in the sculpture garden at sunset. The garden is beautiful, with a lagoon, magnolia grove, and 200-year-old, Spanish moss-laden live oaks. There are
57 sculptures, created by 20th century masters like Henry Moore, as well as contemporary works. After the ceremony, a brass band led us over the bridges to the museum. We waved hankies and the bride and groom led the way, holding parasols. Some sort of New Orleans tradition.

I didn’t get the opportunity to take many photos, so I gathered some images from around the web. It’s a must see if you’re ever down there.

ARTmonday: Cindy Sherman for Balenciaga

In honor of New York Fashion Week, or rather, the end of the week (because really, who has time in the midst?), I couldn’t resist these images by über photographer Cindy Sherman.  For Fashion’s Night Out (Sept. 10), creative director of Balenciaga, Nicholas Ghesquière, hosted the U.S. debut of the show at the label’s flagship store in NYC’s Meatpacking District.  Cindy Sherman: Untitled (Balenciaga) is a six-photo series featuring the Sherman dressed as different fashion stereotypes (“the fashion victim,” “the aging doyenne,” etc.) fully outfitted in Balenciaga. I am totally loving the first image especially.

ARTmonday: Tim Donovan @ Farm Project Space + Gallery

When I popped into Farm Project Space + Gallery the first time this summer, I made a quick purchase of a photo that caught my eye. The photographer is New Hampshire-based Tim Donovan of LaunchArt, and gallerist Susie Nielsen had just that one piece. It was such a split second decision she was surprised, but expertly wrapped it up. It’s another for my collection of pink hued images of girls and young women. I haven’t found a place to hang them yet, but that’s okay for now.

ARTmonday: Pablo Manga at Farm Project Space + Gallery

Summer is often the time my husband and I purchase art.  This summer we got an amazing piece at Farm Project Space + Gallery, a contemporary art gallery in Wellfleet that is quite unlike the other galleries in town. Susie, the owner, has a great eye and appreciation for emerging talents.

Pablo Manga is a Boston-born, San Francisco Bay Area artist who is a former New York City public school teacher, art lawyer, and Academy of art instructor. While living in Mexico City in the late ’90s, Pablo stumbled upon street vendors selling rolls of brightly colored, translucent adhesive tape, which he quickly snapped up. He experimented with them in all sorts of ways, finally settling on the obvious application – horizontal stripes. The tape is layered to create the varying tones and depths.
