ARTmonday: Jaime Derringer Art, Abstract Drawings and Paintings

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a regular contributor to Design Milk,  the best contemporary design site on the web, founded and headed by Jaime Derringer. It turns out, that not only is Jaime super great at her job, she’s also an artist. I knew she did various graphic works for various collaborations, but the other day I saw she had pinned these fantastic, colorful abstract artworks—and they’re hers. I love the clear, bright palette and mix of blocky and curvy shapes. I think I may even pick one out for the condo in Delray Beach. Jaime Derringer art would certainly pop on white.

ARTmonday: Ocean Wave Artworks

It’s July 1, the start of the week of the Fourth of July, a big deal around here. My boys consider it the best day of the year (and not just because we let them have soda, which is basically never allowed). We celebrate with a picnic at Corn Hill beach, which my husband has done his entire life. It’s a definite slice of Americana, with many groups of families and friends that span multiple generations gathering on picnic blankets, with grills, hors d’oeuvres, and cocktails. If it’s warm the kids run in and out of the ocean waves (actually,it’s a  bay beach), and later there are sparklers, s’mores (my favorite part), and fireworks. I’ll definitely snap some Instagram pics (follow StyleCarrot). Here are some ocean wave artworks, all available to purchase online. And speaking of waves, has anyone else been noticing a lot of wave prints in wallpaper and textiles?

ARTmonday: Stephan Alexandr’s Painted Skulls

Portland-based artist and designer, Stephan Alexandr, got in touch recently with photos of his newest work, two-toned zebra skulls, which he  describes as “a modern take on taxidermy.” His uses animal skulls, bones, and other natural materials to create one of a kind wall mounts, decor and functional objects. It’s a natural history lesson for sure!

ARTmonday: Sally Gall Photographs in Nature

I can’t believe I’ve never posted on New York City-based photographer Sally Gall. I learned of her work back when I was an editor at a Travel Holiday magazine in New York, just out of college. I have the first of her two books, The Waters Edge (Umbra Editions / Chronicle Books, 1995), and I believe I even purchased one of her prints as a gift for someone (though maybe not; I can’t find that image anywhere). Sally Gall photographs nature close up and far away, beautiful and eerie, intense and quiet. Here is a sampling of her work throughout her career.

ARTmonday: Amy Shutt Shoots the Birds for Digby & Iona

Aaron Ruff, the jeweler behind the Brooklyn-based label Digby & Iona (named for a pair of quiet seaside towns in Nova Scotia), commissioned Baton Rouge-based photographer Amy Shutt to capture his newest designs—on a taxidermy menagerie. The photos are quirky (and quacky); I love ’em. And the Digby & Iona jewelry too.
