ARTmonday: Lauren Semivan

I love these black and white photos by Lauren Semivan that mix girls and nature in collage-like compositions. Semivan earned her MFA at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. She is represented in NYC by Bonni Benrubi Gallery, where I bought my first photographs many years ago when I started collecting photography, and it was located in a little second floor space on a side street on the Upper East Side. (I just learned this minute in researching Semivan, that Bonni died last year; she was much too young.)

In her artist’s statement, Semivan says that her photography is informed by “the written word, painting, drawing, sculpture, and the raw material of human experience.” All images are made using an early 20th century 8×10″ view camera, and large format negatives are scanned and printed without digital manipulation.

ARTmonday: Photographer Daniel Gordon’s Intensely Colored Still LIfes

Photographs, including the first image below, by Boston-born Daniel Gordon, is part of  the exhibit “Reality Check” at MassArt in Boston, along with Matthew Brandt, the photographer I spotlighted last Monday.  Curated by MassArt’s Lisa Tung, the exhibition, which runs through December 6 in MassArt’s Bakalar & Paine Galleries, features photographs that appear to be digitally altered, but are actually the result of other processes. These works are so colorful they look like acrylic paintings, though they are collage-y type photos. Gordon has a variety of work, and I suspect there will be plenty more to come, as he is young, having graduated from Yale University School of Art in 2005.

His book, Still Lifes, Portraits and Parts ($75) is a limited edition of 1000 and published by Morel Books. There’s a signing this Wednesday, Sept. 25 6-8pm at Dashwood Books, 33 Bond Street, NYC.

ARTmonday: Matthew Brandt’s Lake Photos

I really love these funky landscape photos by Matthew Brandt. He’s an L.A.-based photographer who studied at Cooper Union and UCLA, and has gotten a lot of attention lately. He made last year’s Forbes “Top 30 Under 30 in Art & Design list compiled by Jeffrey Deitch, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and artist Chuck Close. There was also a great article about him in Elle Decor. A number of important museums own his work, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art,  Brooklyn Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Elton John does too. I actually just learned about Matthew Brandt because he’s speaking at MassArt in Boston on Oct. 30.

These images are part of Matthew Bradt’s “Lakes and Reservoirs” series. After shooting his Western landscapes,he heads to the darkroom (a photographer who still uses a darkroom!) to soak prints in water he has collected from those same lakes. A print might bathe for a few days or a few months, and the results vary depending on the length. Some look like traditional landscapes gone awry in the darkroom (or attacked by a bottle of bleach); others have a techno illustrated feel, while others resemble dreamy pastel pieces.

I’m in love, but guessing they’re a bit over my budget. Wah.

ARTmonday: 10 Geometric Portraits by Matthew Bourbon

While browsing one of my favorite art galleries (at least online, since I’ve never actually been there), Kenise Barnes Fine Art in Larchmont, NY, I discovered the work of artist Matthew Bourbon. (I also pulled images from Darke Gallery.)  Bourbon was born in the Bay area, and after college at UC Davis, earned his Masters of Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Bourbon is currently an associate professor in Texas.  He is also an art critic and writer.

His artist’s statement says he is “interested in . . . how information is revealed or obscured” and “how it affects the narrative or possible interpretations of story.” I love the colors and geometric patterns and organic shapes that replace the figures heads or other body parts. It’s portraiture and abstract art in one.
