Just In: 2012 New Trad Designers

Last month, San Francisco-based designer Palmer Weiss, whose work I adore, asked if would submit her work to Traditional Home for its Trad Home New Designers contest. (Trad Home is the magazine’s digital edition). The house we submitted is absolutely gorgeous, and I’m happy to say she won!

The May issue of the print magazine will feature an announcement with everyone’s photos, and the projects of the ten winners will be published in the spring edition of  Trad Home online. The bloggers who nominated the designers will write the accompanying stories. I’ve already did my interviews with Palmer and the homeowner, and will be working on crafting the feature all day today.

Congrats Palmer, and congratulations to the other New Trad winners. Here is a sampling of the designers’ work.

Get the Look: 47 Modern Fireplaces and Fireplace Accessories

Following up on yesterday’s Montage: 31 Freestanding Fireplaces, here is a sampling of fireplaces and accessories, both contemporary and antique. There’s really no excuse not to have a flame of fire—small tabletop models fueled with ethanol can be had at Home Depot. You can even get one that hangs on your wall. Interesting. I’ve had my eye on the minimalist tempered glass screens for our fireplace on the Cape, though I think I need a custom one since it’s raised a foot or two from the floor. I think I’ll concentrate on retrofitting a gas model in our defunct fireplaces in Boston instead.

Sponsor Style: Tiny Prints

It’s true that most tasks are best accomplished via email, but I’m a sucker for stationary. I pay my bills online, but I believe in hand-written thank you notes and pretty party invitations. So I was psyched when Tiny Prints signed on as a Style Carrot sponsor on Friday. Here’s a sampling of their adorable invites. The designs are cute and peppy, and cover pretty much any occasion, from baby announcements to holiday cocktail parties, sweet sixteens to changes of address, even gift tags and personalized organizers. Have a look at my favorites and click through for more.

Covet: Japanese Kokeshi Dolls Reimagined with Modern Flair

Oakland-based designer Mark Giglio translates traditional Japanese wooden Kokeshi dolls with precision and wit, in the manner of modern architect and textile designer Alexander Girard. Like Girard, who designed fabrics for Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson, Giglio too has produced work for Herman Miller. Apple and Dwell are on also his client list.

I’m smitten with the crisp stripes, dots, and diamonds painted in punchy shades on the smooth blocks and spindles. So much so that I’m tempted to snap up a set for myself, never mind bébe. (Figures range in price and availability on the Giglio’s site penpaperpencil.com)

Royal Decor: Graham & Brown Crowns & Coronets Wallpaper

Graham & Brown Crowns & Coronets

I prefer the simple black & white line drawings on their own, but you could—and it would be cute in a kid’s room—dress it up. It’s a DIY design on which you can add paint or self-adhesive gems. I imagine this would be a huge hits with princess-y wannabees.
