Get the Look: 31 Modern Menorahs

Today is the start of the holiday/present season at my house. It is my oldest son’s birthday—he’s 13. Not sure how that happened. But so begins the onslaught of material consumption. Chanukah is in three days. Before I go to bed I’m going to pull out our menorahs so I can start chipping away at last year’s wax drippings (unless by some miracle—’tis the season after all—I cleaned them before returning to the velvet boxes last December.)

We have a few menorahs: the electric one all Jews grew up with, that goes in the window; beautiful modular ones from MoMA that my mother-in-law gave us; a traditional “Tree of LIfe”; a more contemporary version of the tree, from a friend as a wedding gift; a cute metal train I purchased for the boys when they were little; and an artisan-made wrought iron menorah, also from my mother-in-law (who’s not even Jewish by the way, but loves to participate).

Get the Look: 48 Pendant Lights Perfect for Hallways

Following up on yesterday’s post Montage: 28 Hallways With Pendants, I’ve rounded up 48 pendant lights that are perfect to use in succession in long (or short) hallways. Good lighting definitely works to improve home ambiance and helps keeps moods lifted, especially in these dark winter months. (As much as I loved Copenhagen, I suppose it’s best I don’t live in Scandinavia.)

I tend to refer to our downstairs as a dungeon (we live on the parlor and lower levels, so to speak), but at least the lower levels house the bedrooms. Thankfully the living room, where my desk (and work sofa!) is has a large bay window that looks onto a lovely urban view of historic buildings, and right now, trees with lingering red and gold leaves. The ceiling is also rather low, so likely I’ll have to go with flush or semi-flush mount fixtures, but I wanted to provide you with an array of pendants that would enliven more prominent (or humdrum but high) hallways.

Cuing off the styles in yesterday’s post, you can see that pretty much any style of pendant can work. I don’t actually light candles all that often (though my boys think it’s fun to have a fancy dinner with candlelight at home), but I seem to always be admiring candlesticks. Get the Look: 34 Brass Accents

Brass made a comeback a few years ago, and although copper is the metal of the moment (yes, I’ll roundup copper goodies for you soon), brass shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, it’s creeping even deeper in the house. In addition to wall sculptures and sputnik chandeliers, faucets have gone brassy. Bits of brass are popping up in bathrooms and kitchens. Today I’m working on a brass in the kitchen post for Lamps Plus, which I’ll supplement with a Montage here on StyleCarrot.
