Montage: 27 Little Boys’ Bedrooms

As my friend (and new interior design client) starts thinking about transitioning her two-year-old to a big boy bed (baby #2 is due in August), we’ve been exploring cute non-crib rooms for kids. I have a lot of photos of great rooms with two twin beds, but I’m holding those back for another time. These rooms are one-bed-only spaces, but include a mix of toddler beds, twins, and doubles.  Also, you won’t find any tired, kitschy kid themes here either. Sports bedrooms, sailboat bedrooms, no way. A well-designed room with human decor is the way to go.  A few might look familiar, but hopefully there are plenty of new rooms too.

Montage: 40 Painted Built-In Bookshelves (Blue, Green, Black, Yellow, Orange, Red, Purple . . .)

I love the richness of the painted woodwork in these rooms. The tones are of course, much deeper than I would dare to go in my own home. Most of the time. A couple of years ago, inspired by such shelving, I actually had my husband paint the built-in bookcases in our family room a deep purple. It wasn’t awful, but it wasn’t great either. We’ve since gone back to white, with taupey greige walls, compliments of the whole family room re-do. But still, it doesn’t stop me from admiring the work of designers accomplished enough to pull it off, particularly Katie Ridder, who does it with great panache, in monochromatic and highly contrasty spaces, and also, Miles Redd. Which colors do you love best?

Montage: 45 Colorful Doors, Inside and Out

Photos of doors painted in cheery colors have been accumulating on my hard drive for a while, though lately they’ve seemed to increase in popularity. In addition to a mad rush of them on Pinterest, especially of the neon variety, several of the projects I’ve written about have included painted doors. There’s the Boston loft by Duncan Hughes, with the cerulean blue sliding barn door, the San Francisco home I wrote about in TRADhome, designed by Palmer Weiss (though that particular photo was not included), and designer Lisa Kreiling’s own townhouse I wrote about for Boston Home, soon to be published. Lisa told me that black doors were pretty much the starting point in her design.

Montage: 44 Rooms with Candlesticks and Candelabras

Ever since I got back from my design trip to Copenhagen last fall, I’ve been really interested in candlesticks. Candles are a key element in Scandinavian interiors, the fire adding both warmth and light over the long winter months of shortened days. I fell for smooth, brightly colored wooden pairs in the airport outpost of the department store Illums Bolighus, and located a set on eBay when I got home. (More beat up than smooth, but very inexpensive.) A lot of these interiors are Scandinavian in style, though not all. I bet you will recognize some specific candle holders and candelabras below. Which can you identify?
