Montage: 64 Rooms with Black and White Art

I’ve been really drawn to black and white abstract artworks recently. For instance, I could really go for a Franz Kline. OK, so that isn’t likely, but there are plenty of alternatives, and designers are incorporating them into interiors rather a lot of late. From misshapen ink blots and robust geometrics to feathery woodcuts and simple hand-drawn forms, black and white artworks elevate the sophistication level of a room.

I love the look, but I’ve found myself hesitating when confronted with the opportunity to purchase such a piece. Maybe the thought of laying out a lot of money for such simplicity is not as exciting as taking ownership of something bright and shiny. But let’s be serious, that could end up being the difference between something trendy from Forever 21 or a beautifully tailored Armani. No comparison. Happily, we recently purchased a pair of drawings that resemble thread. I had them matted and framed and they look fantastic. (I’ll try to post a photo later today.)

Montage: 65 Rooms with Bunk Beds

Looking back at my last bunk bed post from almost two years ago, I see I only included 17 examples. I can do better.

Montage: 45 Rooms with Sideboards

I’ve been really interested in sideboards lately, especially Danish modern ones. While my first inclination for a sideboard is to skip the furniture altogether and build one in, the pieces are actually quite good looking, useful, and can be gotten at a good deal, particularly on eBay. It’s quite the grown up piece of furniture—a sideboard implies you have a second set of fancy dishes to store or highball glasses. And then there’s the need to artfully arrange a display on top, and hang a mirror or artwork. If you have a dining room, or a spacious living room that needs filler, definitely consider one. Here are a bunch of ideas on how to incorporate a sideboard into your decor.

Montage: 54 Kitchen Banquettes

Our Boston condo is under renovation. One of the features we are adding is a banquette adjacent to the kitchen area. It seems to me that there’s been a proliferation of built-in seating recently. Unlike the booths of the ’70s (I grew up with an orange and white vinyl booth in a kitchen with oversize floral wallpaper that had a gold, brown, and orange plaid border), today’s specimens are sophisticated and sleek.

Ours will be U-shaped (not ideal, but we’re dealing with a tight space), with a pale blue and taupe chevron upholstered seat-back and pale blue faux leather seat cushion. The custom table has a walnut herringbone-pattern top on a restaurant supply style stainless base. I’ll post a photo when it’s complete. (If I’m not dead first.)

In the meantime, here are 54 very fabulous banquettes. In addition, check out my piece “The Haute Seat,” in last Sunday’s Boston Globe Magazine.

Montage: 65 Palm Beach Style Rooms

With summer not far away, it’s no surprise I’ve got color on my mind. Not that I’ll ever go all out in my own house, but I definitely admire the mix of brights that designers employ in rooms with WASP style. The color, the prints, the faux bamboo, the ornate mirrors, the ugly porcelain frogs. It’s all a whirl of fun. Last month I put together two Palm Beach primers for The Inside SourcePart 1 focused on the work of designers Ellen Hamilton, Annsley McAleer, and Angie Hranowsky; Part 2 on Amanda Nisbet and Palmer Weiss. Here are more rooms with a Palm Beach aesthetic.
