Just In: My Top 16 Picks from the Serena & Lily Summer Sale

We’re heading into the second half of summer, and yes that’s reason to lament. However. . . there’s an upside, and not just a proverbial silver lining. Something (or rather somethings) really, really, good. S A L E S pretty much everywhere, including some top StyleCarrot partners. From the half-yearly Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (my 25 must-haves here — just five days left by the way; prices go back up on Monday) to a Stockroom Sale at West Elm, it’s a good time for online shopping for new clothes and home stuff.

One of my favorite online sources for bedding (baby, kids, and grownups), bar stools, beds and headboards, and artwork (I love their pretty abstracts)  is Serena & Lily. Right now Serena & Lily is having a “Private Sale” (meaning you just have to pop in an email address) with discounts up to 60 percent.

There are some pieces that you have been probably meaning to purchase—new sheets to refresh your bed, wallpaper for the powder room.  a cozy throw as a hostess gift, more bar stools for your beach house, brightly colored baskets for your kids toys. I did some preliminary scouting for you. Here are my top 16 home furnishings finds from the Serena & Lily sale.

Designer Spotlight: Erin Sullivan Objects

An email about Erin Sullivan Objects, a design line I had never heard of, popped into my in box a week or two ago. I scrolled through the images and immediately clicked for more. The pieces are stunning.

Erin Sullivan is a New York-based artist-designer who works primarily in bronze, creating objets d’art and accent furniture. The allure of bronze transpired through her interest in sculpture and intaglio printmaking while attending Sarah Lawrence College. She found herself more drawn to plate textures created through the acid process than the final printed paper. Sullivan first created  jewelry. Then her pieces grew in scale, to jewel-like objects and furniture.

Formally trained in classic sculpture, painting and drawing, Sullivan approaches her work as an artist more than as an industrial designer. Once her idea is on paper, Sullivan either sculpts a model using wax reproductions created from a natural object, or creates a three-dimensional rendering and rapid prototype. A mold of the final model follows, from which a duplicate wax positive is produced.

Once this wax is “chased” or reworked, with great attention paid to detail, “gates” or wax rods are attached to create channels for the molten bronze to travel through. The whole structure is then dipped, poured, devested, sand-blasted, welded, chased, re-detailed, polished and patinated. Depending on the size of the piece, the process can take three months from start to finish.

The Erin Sullivan Objects collection debuted about a year ago and includes 15 home furnishings and decor objects that are a cross between beautiful sculpture and functional interior furnishings. Each piece is a study of natural, beauty, sensual, spiritual and absolutely original. Sullivan is inspired by her world travels and interactions with indigenous cultures and rituals.

Get the Look: 30 Cute Cosmetic Cases

Last week I pulled together a collection of cute cosmetic cases, “Kiss & Make Up” in the Boston Globe. I generally like to do a travel-related roundup in the summer, and I had already done weekend bags last year.

Mostly, though, I was inspired by a particularly cute cosmetic case by Deux Luxe, that the publicist had sent me back in the winter—the Anguilla cosmetic case in jade green emblazoned with exotic birds. I love the look. Unfortunately it didn’t make it into the Globe, but I’ve included it here (#17), along with 29 other cute cosmetic case finds.

Bostonians, pay attention to #1, #9, and #18 by ultra preppy, Brookline-based design label Ame & Lulu. I’m kind of attached to #2 from Catseye London. Adorable, though maybe channels too much of a crazy cat lady vibe? There’s a doggie one as well (#21). And if you’re more of a boho girl, Target has a couple of great Coachella-worthy makeup bags (#5 and #8).

Browse through for a new one; you know yours is smeared with gunk. Me? I still use the iconic brown & white striped cosmetic bags and toiletry case from Henri Bendel, a long-ago gift from an ex boyfriend’s mom. And yeah, it’s a bit worn.

ARTmonday: 12 Orphaned Artworks from OODE

Two years ago I did an interview with Marleen Kurvers, stylist and proprietor of Dutch Design Year, a design shop in Amsterdam.  Her most recent venture is GALERIE OODE, also in Amsterdam. Kurvers offers a curated selection of orphaned artworksartwork that was left in storage because the museums that owned it closed. Kurvers says, “We want to bring them back to the public so people can adopt them!”

This OODE  is exhibiting the work of Jan de Mug, a Dutch graphic designer and painter from Den Bosch. His work from the Foundation of Disinherited Goods/ Onterfd Goed are abstract, minimalistic paintings and drawings. I know a lot of people who are visiting Amsterdam this summer, so make a point to stop by Galerie Oode to see the orphaned artworks and say hi to Kurvers.

I’ve included one here along with other pieces of orphaned artworks from OODE.
