Just In: West Elm Debuts Boston Designers

West Elm has launched a new local assortment at the Fenway store in Boston, showcasing a small selection of stand-out Boston-area artisans. Boston is one of six markets for which West Elm chose to do this. Introducing local is part of West Elm’s larger commitment to its stores’ communities. The goal is to grow each store’s local offerings significantly; they are actively sourcing potential partners. (You can even send suggestions to [email protected].)

The eight Massachusetts makers are Jennifer Hill of J.Hill Design, Shannon Wallack of Shanman Clay Co., Culinarium Kitchenware, Jessica Harrington of Re-Studios, Cara Taylor of Taylor Ceramics, Whitney Elizabeth of Whitney Somerville, Alice Saunders of Forest Bound, and Brian Johnson of The Uncommon Green.

The Fenway store is hosting a launch party from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, May 1. In the meantime, here’s a sampling of their work.

Get the Look: Modern Watering Cans

A watering can is one of those things you don’t think of having (or have room for) when you live in the city. (Or maybe you do, if you’re all green thumb-y.) A while back, I fell in love with a sleek, stainless steel watering can at MoMA (no longer available), that I received as a holiday gift. The long, skinny spout, great for filling vases around the house, is als, not conducive to city-size cabinets, so it lives on the Cape.

I have been thinking of getting another one that’s more compact for Boston (love the copper X3 by Kontextur, though the Born In Sweden watering can is more practical and comes in excellent colors.) I actually don’t have an outdoor watering can on the Cape, which I think I should get if I have any hope of growing anything this summer, which I kinda do. (Shocking, I know.) Here are 20 colorful, modern watering cans, for indoors and out.

Get the Look: 18 Graphic Picture Tees

Now that the weather is a bit warmer, I have abandoned by ankle length Patagonia puffer (attractive look, I know). I love wearing an edgy T-shirt underneath a blazer. There’s been an abundance of model and street style T-shirts on the market, along with an appearance of concert tees from yesteryear.

I’ve actually gotten a couple of cute, casual striped blazers at Gap over the last year which have been a staple, along with a cream and navy stripe Tory Burch blazer from several years ago. (The Tory Burch Augusta Jacket, which is a similar idea but with much wider stripes, is on sale. Also, try Gap; maybe the Classic Stripe Blazer) Perhaps I need to do a spring blazers for daytime post!

In the meantime, let’s look at some at some digital photo graphic tees. Kate Moss and Audrey are my faves.

ARTmonday: 15 Picks from Rise Art

Rise Art contacted me last month, drawn to the photography choices I made in my ARTmonday post, “Figures In the Landscape.” They asked me to curate a collection, which I worked on this weekend and they will publish later this week. My theme will be some sort of personal take on the impending spring.

Rise Art offers artwork for sale that is curated by its team, sourced from artists in graduate degree programs, galleries, and museums. You can browse freely, or take its art style quiz for guidance. For today’s post here, I chose 15 completely random artworks for Rise Art that caught my eye. I’ve included a mix of mediums (photography, collage, paper cuts) as well as genres (portraiture, landscape, abstract, still life). And I definitely found some artists I’ll focus on in more details in the coming months.
