Montage: 27 Rooms with Ladders

Ladders have been popular in interiors for a while now, not just to access books, but in bathrooms as towel racks. Even stepladders have been appropriated, sometimes with a tray on top, as side tables. To accompany my piece,  “Trendlet: Ladders” on The Inside Source, I’ve put together an expanded montage of ladder decor.

ARTmonday: Elephants in Art

The elephant is the season’s “it” animal in interiors and the arts. I’m seeing them everywhere, from the stage to indie films, in shelter mags and in the shops. The elephant is not new to the style scene. Iconic examples of the beast have been around a while. Here’s a quick look at select elephants  in the arts. Tomorrow I have a montage of elephants incorporated in decor, and on Wednesday, some cute pachyderms for sale. If you’re eager for an immediate glimpse of rooms and items, check out  “Trendlet Alert: Elephants” on The Inside Source.

Fine Print: Designers’ Homes in CFDA Book

WWD reports that the CFDA (that’s the Council of Fashion Designers of America for those of you not in the fashion know) and glossy book publisher Assouline are publishing American Fashion Designers at Home, a coffee-table book that will showcase homes from over 100 of its members. It’s due out in September ($65, to benefit the CFDA Foundation), though it’s featured on neither Amazon nor Assouline’s own site yet.

Glimpses will include new and yes, we’ve seen them before images, including Carolina Herrera UES (that’s Upper East Side for you non-New Yorkers) co-op, Donna Karan’s Parrot Cay guest house, Josie Natori’s Paris pied-à-terre, Diane von Furstenberg’s Cloudwalk estate in Litchfield County, Ralph Lauren’s Double RL ranch in Telluride, Mark Badgley and James Mischka’s horse farm in the rolling Kentucky hills, Lela Rose’s TriBeCa loft, and Bob Mackie’s vibrant L.A. pad. And, of course, no fashion décor tome would be complete without Jenna Lyons’ Park Slope brownstone.

Here are the images online at WWD. I contacted the publicists at Assouline, begging for more . . .

Angel Sanchez’s Mondrian-inspired living room.

The roof deck of Elie Tahari’s triplex in Soho , complete with family.

The guest house at Donna Karan’s Parrot Cay retreat in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Montage: 23 Wall Installations

I’ve been really interested in the idea of wall installations lately; a natural progression after last year’s obsession with wall sculptures. While you can use pretty much anything to create pattern and texture to blank walls, the ones I’m most attracted to are the art works. ( I have an ‘everyday objects as wall art’ post in the works as well). A few months ago I blogged about Tracy Melton’s tree ring encaustic paintings I purchased on Etsy. We finally hung them yesterday and they look fantastic – the picture is below. (My lack of photography, lighting and styling skills don’t do the installation justice.) I had planned on lining them up in a grid, but my ever artistic husband (he has a knack, surprisingly), insisted they’d look better scattered. Like ’em?

ARTmonday: Holly Irwin

Artist Holly Irwin wrote to me last week to say she’s a new Style Carrot fan. I’m now a fan of her paintings, especially these dreamy images of women in full skirts. Irwin lives and paints in a seaside village in Alabama and is represented by Lagerquist Gallery in Atlanta, Loretta Goodwin Gallery in Birmingham, and Lyons Share Gallery in Fairhope, Alabama.
