Designer Spotlight: Diane von Furstenberg to Launch Home Textiles

Known for wrap dresses in a-mazing prints, Diane von Furstenberg has designed a line of textiles for the home. Some of the designs were previewed in this month’s Elle Decor. Really, what took her so long?

The colorful animal prints are fun, though I’d love to see some more original, global-inspired prints like the ones we saw on the runway the last couple of seasons. The stripes are not so interesting, but versatile for home decor, I suppose.

Scroll down . . . in case you missed it earlier this year, she designed incredible, luxurious guest rooms at Claridge’s Hotel in London, which feature a number of the prints.

ARTmonday: Cindy Sherman for Balenciaga

In honor of New York Fashion Week, or rather, the end of the week (because really, who has time in the midst?), I couldn’t resist these images by über photographer Cindy Sherman.  For Fashion’s Night Out (Sept. 10), creative director of Balenciaga, Nicholas Ghesquière, hosted the U.S. debut of the show at the label’s flagship store in NYC’s Meatpacking District.  Cindy Sherman: Untitled (Balenciaga) is a six-photo series featuring the Sherman dressed as different fashion stereotypes (“the fashion victim,” “the aging doyenne,” etc.) fully outfitted in Balenciaga. I am totally loving the first image especially.

Designer Spotlight: Iman Debuts IMAN Home at Fashion Week

Iman, in collaboration with special events designer Carlos Mota, designed the Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge at Lincoln Center for Fashion Week as a preview of her new line IMAN Home, which launches later this month. The line of fabrics, which was inspired by traditional, global crafts, marks Iman’s first venture into home décor. (She already has makeup fragrance, clothing, and accessories labels.)

Iman amidst her textiles in the Star Lounge at Lincoln Center yesterday.

I love the graphic trellis pattern (it’s surely more affordable than Ms. Wearstler’s) and the peacock print is gorgeous.  Speaking of which, Iman is still stunning. Wow.

I found a couple of other shots. The designs look great. I’m guessing a mid-range price point, since the line will be sold at Calico Corner and Calico Home stores.

Fine Print: Lars Bolander’s Scandinavian Design

The Vendome Press, September, 2010

Swedish interior designer Lars Bolander, who has showrooms in New York City and West Palm Beach, recently published his first book, Lars Bolander’s Scandinavian Design.

The book is quite beautiful, featuring a mix of spare modern spaces and traditionally furnished Scandinavian rooms. While the aesthetic is incredibly different, one quite modernist the other a more restrained, almost urban version of shabby chic, the designs share common elements, like muted colors, light floors, beautiful lighting, and an overall soothing sensibility.  (All four Scandinavian countries are represented. Can you name them?)

I interviewed Mr. Bolander for “The Inside Source.” I’ll link here when the piece is live later this week. [UPDATE: Lars Bolander on TIS.] Meanwhile, I didn’t want to hold off showing you the beautiful photos. Hopefully you haven’t seen them all on other design blogs yet.

The second image, which pictures a quintessential Gustavian living room, is my favorite. I love the bold blue wallpaper in the bedroom shot too. And, that glass corner bathroom with the overhead rain shower is pretty terrific too.

ARTmonday: Tim Donovan @ Farm Project Space + Gallery

When I popped into Farm Project Space + Gallery the first time this summer, I made a quick purchase of a photo that caught my eye. The photographer is New Hampshire-based Tim Donovan of LaunchArt, and gallerist Susie Nielsen had just that one piece. It was such a split second decision she was surprised, but expertly wrapped it up. It’s another for my collection of pink hued images of girls and young women. I haven’t found a place to hang them yet, but that’s okay for now.
