Scheming: Meredith + Daniel’s Dining Spaces

It’s been a while since I’ve reported on Meredith & Daniel’s apartment; I definitely owe you some schemes. It’s coming together. The apartment has two living room/dining room spaces, each on either side of the kitchen. One will function as the playroom/family room with a casual eating area. The other is a more grown-up living room and dining room. Both are still usable by any age—the grown-up one is hardly formal, but it will be  a toy-free zone (we hope!). As you can see, the tables and chairs for both are quite durable and versatile. A glam sputnik dresses up the adult space.

Design Diary: Victor’s in Provincetown

Recently we met friends for dinner at Victor’s in Provincetown. It was our first time there, and we were pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere was light and airy; very enjoyable. Unlike a lot of Outer Cape restaurants, which are oddly dark or horrendously touristy, this one let’s you feel like your’e in a beach town, without blatant reminders. The food was good too. We’ll definitely go back. (PS – There’s a drag brunch every Sunday.)

ARTmonday: Photographer Motoyuki Daifu

I came across these images by Japanese photographer Motoyuki Daifu earlier this year through a review in the New Yorker of his show, “Lovesody” at Lombard Freid Projects. There’s nothing pretty about them, rather, they’re messy, tiring, and I was drawn in.

They document the days of a young Japanese mother of two, with whom Daifu fell in love. He said the photographs were, “originally meant just for the two of us,” and the magazine points out “that’s precisely what draws the viewer in.”

They’re honest. Almost mundane, but not dull. They’re imbued with a raw sense of everyday life. Slightly gritty. A bit peeping Tom-ish, but not titillating. They really portray the drudgery of motherhood, but not in an ironic or self-conscious way. I had put off posting them all this time because I wasn’t sure if people  would relate or respond to them. I’m curious to know what  they evoke for you.
