Montage: 35 Bell Jars (or Cloches If You’re French)

Anything can be art under glass. I first heard this from stylist Kara Butterfield, who displayed rocks in and under tumblers on her mantle in Boston. She told me,  “If you put anything in a glass, or behind glass it celebrates it, gives it meaning, like a picture in a frame.”  Others seem to be catching on. Bell jars, or cloches, seem to be on every console and coffee table, containing anything from fawn figurines to succulents or matchbox cars to brass nails. J. Crew has even been showcasing shoes under them. Here’s a look at 35 examples which includes live plants, dead insects, and inanimate objects from the ordinary to intricate.

Get the Look: Where the Wild Things Are

Today, Maurice Sendak, author of Where the Wild Things Are (1963), died at age 83 in Connecticut due to complications from a stroke. Although for some reason I did not have his books growing up, I read them over and over to my own boys. I always savored the illustrations in this one, and really enjoyed the silliness of Into the Night Kitchen (1970). I put together a few decorating ideas inspired by these wonderfully creative tales. RIP Maurice Sendak, storyteller.

ARTmonday: Diana Delgado Colorful Abstract Paintings

I discovered painter Diana Delgado on Elements of Style, in which Erin Gates went bananas for the leopard print swatch in the first painting below. Based in New York, Delgado received her MFA from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 2007 and her BFA from Syracuse in 2005. I love the colors in these paintings—note the neon—and mix of geometric forms with drips. In her artist’s statement she explains:

While color is a driving force behind decisions made on the canvas, raw gesture, geometric shapes/forms and pattern play important roles. Representational elements and seemingly unstable architectural structures exist within the abstract atmospheres. . . Reoccurring themes in the large-scale canvases are personal narrative, glam, fashion and the embracing of frivolousness.
