Just In: Foscarini Binic Lamp In New Colors For Spring

In Fall 2011 I traveled to Venice on a press trip sponsored by Italian lighting company Foscarini, as a representative for contemporary design site Design Milk, for which I used to work as an editor. Foscarini hosted a handful of international bloggers and lighting designers at their offices for the day and brought us on a guided tour of the Venice Biennale (you can see my Venice Biennale 2011 photos here).

Not only did I meet incredibly talented designers, including Ionna Vautrin, designer of the adorable Foscarini Binic lamp, Luca Nichetto who designed the Stewie, and Jozeph Forakis who designed the Tivu and Havana lamps, I also bonded with bloggers I wouldn’t have otherwise met, like Micle Mihai-Cristian of contemporary design site Freshome. The Foscarini folks recorded little videos of all us speaking about design concepts, which I posted here.

Vautrin dubbed her little table lamp by Foscarini “Binic” after a tiny lighthouse off the rocky coast of Brittany. Foscarini will be debuting the Binic lamp in fresh, new colors for spring, at Salone Del Mobile in Milan next month, and they will be available in the States in early June. In the meantime, the Foscarini Binic lamp is currently available in six colors.

I’m crazy about the mint color, it’s the perfect hue for this whimsical silhouette. The yellow Binic would make the perfect pop of color in a grey, white, or blue room. As for the pale pink and grey, well these Binics are the perfect shades to complement the model apartment I’m decorating in Boston. Perhaps I need to incorporate one.

Just In: Jessica Biales Jewelry Collection Inspired by Matisse Cut-Outs

This isn’t the first time I’ve written about Jessica Biales and it won’t be the last. (Check out Jessica Biales’ signet rings and slice rings, which have been featured in Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, and the Wall Street Journal and were for a time sold at J.Crew). Jessica is a close friend of mine from college, where she was the most refined, urban girl I had ever met. So many years later and her style hasn’t waned.

Jessica’s latest collection is called “Scissors” and was inspired by the Matisse cut-outs in the exhibit at MoMA that ended earlier this month, Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs. You can see examples of Matisse’s cut-outs that influenced her new jewelry collection below. As for Matisse, here is a description paraphrased from the MoMA site about the advent of the cut-outs:

Starting in the late 1940s, Henri Matisse turned to paper cut with scissors as his primary medium, which resulted in a new form of art that came to be called a cut-out. Matisse would cut painted sheets into forms of varying shapes and sizes—from the vegetal to the abstract—which he then arranged into lively compositions.

The Jessica Biales Scissors Collection, inspired by Matisse cut-outs, includes bracelets, rings, earrings, and necklaces in sterling silver and 18-karat gold.

Shopping Trip: Lou & Grey

Today I’m partnering with Lou & Grey, an offshoot of Ann Taylor LOFT that elevates loungewear by using textural fabrics and on trend silhouettes to create a collection of easy living pieces with a bit of edge. There are nubby oversize popovers, drawstring pants tailored enough to wear outdoors, stripey knit moto jackets, worn denim, a multitude of leggings, and soft drapey tees.

Interspersed with the Lou & Grey clothing, which is done in a palette of grey and oatmeal, with chambray, indigo, and shots of burgundy, is delicate, on-trend jewelry (lots of triangles) by makers that include Zoe Comings from Austin and New Refined Basics from Portland. There are also colorblock canvas pouches by Bittle & Burley and amazing candles in scents of storm, charcoal, and bone in handmade ceramic pots; both makers are out of Brooklyn. In addition, there are organic beauty products, matte ceramic canisters with cork tops, herringbone throws, stacks of Kinfolk magazines, and a carefully edited selection of books.

The decor is perfect, with white wood plank floors, copper pipe clothes rails, table bases, and pendants, marble slabs, oak shelving, linen fitting room curtains, and leather hooks. It actually looks a lot like a gorgeous South End condo that I wrote about in the Boston Globe Magazine last Sunday. Lou & Grey is pretty much Pinterest come alive.

I visited the new Lou & Grey retail space at the Natick Mall outside Boston. (There’s a store open in Westport, CT too. I’ll definitely stop by when I’m there for Thanksgiving.) Let’s take the tour.
