Shopping Trip: 1630 A Colonial Chic PopUp by Visual Dialogue

UPDATE:  1630 has popped up at Faneuil Hall for December 2015
Faneuil Hall Marketplace, South Market Building  • across from the Christmas tree

If you live in Boston and haven’t stopped by the colonial Boston-themed pop-up shoppe 1630, you must. This week. The pop-up, which I wrote about for the Boston Globe is open through Sunday, November 15th.

Developed and executed by Susan Battista and Fritz  Klaetke, the wife and husband duo behind South End-based design and branding agency Visual Dialogue, the shop and its contents are an exercise in thoughtful, clever, and refined design. Battista and Klaetke are incredibly talented designers with razor sharp skills for curating talent to support their vision. Plus, they took turns working the till every day, adding shopkeeper to their resumes.

The goods, both vintage and locally made, celebrate Boston’s colonial history, elegantly. In a sense, it’s a gift shop for both visitors and absolute natives)= who wouldn’t dream of buying tacky T-shirts and such. In addition to vintage finds, there are a number of items from local artisans that make perfect holiday presents, including chunks of herb encrusted soaps, re-imagined vintage pendants, hand-dyed tote bags, oxford cloth aprons, pressed seaweed prints, handmade metal pens, leather keychains, felt pennants, appealing T-shirts, and the cutest onesie in the city.

The props are covet-worthy too. Artist & builder Doug Weathersby created wooden colonial dudes that populate the shoppe, and also  made an ingenious bar for opening night, out of wood scraps from the said figures. The wall paint color, which you will certainly ask about, is Benjamin Moore HC-156 Van Eeussen Blue.

1630 occupies the former Nanette Lepore boutique on the second floor of 119 Newbury Street between Clarendon and Dartmouth. Stop in and take a selfie with Ben Franklin.

Just In: My Top 16 Picks from the Serena & Lily Summer Sale

We’re heading into the second half of summer, and yes that’s reason to lament. However. . . there’s an upside, and not just a proverbial silver lining. Something (or rather somethings) really, really, good. S A L E S pretty much everywhere, including some top StyleCarrot partners. From the half-yearly Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (my 25 must-haves here — just five days left by the way; prices go back up on Monday) to a Stockroom Sale at West Elm, it’s a good time for online shopping for new clothes and home stuff.

One of my favorite online sources for bedding (baby, kids, and grownups), bar stools, beds and headboards, and artwork (I love their pretty abstracts)  is Serena & Lily. Right now Serena & Lily is having a “Private Sale” (meaning you just have to pop in an email address) with discounts up to 60 percent.

There are some pieces that you have been probably meaning to purchase—new sheets to refresh your bed, wallpaper for the powder room.  a cozy throw as a hostess gift, more bar stools for your beach house, brightly colored baskets for your kids toys. I did some preliminary scouting for you. Here are my top 16 home furnishings finds from the Serena & Lily sale.

Just In: 25 Picks from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

StyleCarrot partner Nordstrom is having a serious sale. Yes, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale starts today. As in Shop. Right. Now. New fall looks are on sale through August 3rd, but if you see something you like, better to jump in quickly because this is a highly anticipated sale event. (Key dramatic music.) I clicked through pages of items—the sale includes clothing, beauty, and accessories for women, men, and kids—and picked out the 25 items I’d buy.

I’ve actually had my eye on that DVF metallic clutch for a while, and I can always use a new wrap dress (especially in green!), grey shift dress, and Bobbi Brown lip color. I have a Rebecca Minkoff 5-zip cross-body bag in teal; I’d certainly get lots of use from the nude one. I like it because it’s not particularly large, but plenty roomy enough for a phone, compact, keys, and money, and drapes nicely with that nice heavy (but not too heavy) chain. I’ve been toying with the idea of Hunter rain boots. Not to be trendy, but because I don’t actually own rain boots. Can anyone tell me if they are comfortable?

I’m actually more tempted by the Sperry duck boots though; they look cozy. Probably a better bet for Boston. The Rag & Bone jeans seem to be a perfect cut—they’re a “slim boyfriend jean.” Promising. I just bought new black Nike Flyknit sneakers similar to the ones here. I figure getting black means that since it’s unlikely I’ll actually exercise in them at least I could wear them on the street. And finally, I love black diamonds, especially set in rose gold, if anyone is looking for present ideas.

You might need a refresh on your Hanky Panky lace thongs, Kiehl’s body cream, designer sunglass upgrade, or a simple everyday tote. Excuse me, vegan tote.

Happy anniversary sale.

Just In: Lemlem x Anthropologie Decor

Earlier this week Anthropologie debuted a home furnishings collaboration with model turned maternal health advocate and lemlem clothing label founder Liya Kebede. You know lelem . . . the adorable but somehow sophisticated enough boho beach pieces with the pretty stripes. Yes, Lemlem decor.

Lemlem x Anthropologie is a beach home inspired collection that is meant to embody the spirit of Kebede’s homeland of Ethiopia, known for “13 Months of Sunshine.” The 15 piece Lemlem decor collection includes bedding, bath, and table linens, as well as candles and a journal. Prices range from $8 to $298.

Meaning to “bloom” or “flourish” in Amharic, lemlem decor and fashions are produced in Ethiopia by locals out of natural cotton using traditional methods but infused with a fresh, modern feel. Here is a sampling of Lemlem x Anthropologie.
