ARTmonday: Venice Biennale 2011

On our second day in Venice we took a guided tour of the Biennale. While I’ve visited Venice before, I’d never been to the art exhibit; needless to say I was thrilled. La Biennale takes place in Venice every two years (hence the name). Foscarini, which is a sponsor of the festival, hosted us on a stroll through some of the 30 permanent national pavilions in the city’s Giardini (public gardens) as well as a guided tour of the “ILLUMInations” exhibit in the Venetian Arsenal. Below are the highlights from the Arsenale, which features 83 artists from around the world. Here’s a glimpse of what I saw:

ARTmonday: Ginette La Palme

Artist Ginette La Palme is an artist and illustrator who lives with a tiger-striped cat named Washington in Toronto. While her portfolio is mostly filled with offbeat watercolors and drawings of cartoon-like characters, from grinning tree trunks and teapots to hide-and-go-seek kitties, I’m fixated on these brightly decorated twigs. They’re inspiring a walk through the woods and a trip to an art supply store.

ARTmonday: Quercus Designs

Yesterday I finally caught up with miles of blog posts on Remodelista. I found a few items I must have, including the work of Jennifer Steen Booher, who photographs natural object assemblages under the name Quercus Designs. I purchased two 12x12s (the first two shown here) from her Etsy shop, and plan to hang them in our house on  the Cape. The silhouettes have a crisp sparseness, that I think, along with the colors, that work really well. So simple, but very satisfying. She writes about her work — where she found the tokens and such — on her blog. Bar Harbor Yacht Club, May 29, 2011

ARTmonday: Peace Beads

Yes, I’m a day behind with this art post, but really, I haven’t blogged in so long; so sorry. (I’ve been posting consistently on Style Carrot • Boston, for those of you who are local.) Last week we attended the art show at a neighborhood elementary school. I was very taken with these “peace beads” which were created by the kindergarten class. Simply lovely.

ARTmonday: Martha Rich

When I studied art history at NYU one summer, I spent a lot of time at museums. I bought a postcard that summer at the Met— Cakes by Wayne Thibault. I still love his work. More recently, I’ve been going crazy for the work I’m discovering on 20×200, which offers limited edition prints at crazy affordable prices. One of the artists that immediately caught my eye is Martha Rich.

I found delectables on the artist’s own website.
