ARTmonday: IFPDA Print Fair

The IFPDA Print Fair, an art fair for prints, dating from the old masters to contemporary works, takes place at the  Park Avenue Armory in New York City this Wednesday, November 5, 2014, though Sunday, November 9, 2014. It’s a well-respected fair, with top collector pieces, but also includes more accessibly priced works. Here’s a preview of ten prints from the IFPDA Print Fair from Artsy.

ARTmonday: Fort Point Open Studios

Fort Point Open Studios in Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood is this coming weekend, Saturday & Sunday October 18th & 19th. It is the 35th anniversary of Fort Point Open Studios and more than 150 artists open their studio doors to visitors, thanks to the hard work of artist and organizer Gabrielle Schaffner.

You can spend the day exploring the historic waterfront warehouses (there are artists’ studios in 14 buildings, all within walking distance, though there will be a free shuttle too) that are home to painters, sculptors, ceramicists, jewelers, performance artists, printmakers, book artists, photographers, and others for a behind the scenes look at where Boston artists create their work. There are both established artists and emerging talents.

My friend and longtime Fort Point artist, photographer Stephen Sheffield whose studio I blogged about this spring, will be there, as well as graphic designer Jennifer Hill who I know from Design Salon (and Facebook), and furniture maker Quentin Kelly, whose color-edged stool I included in the Boston Globe recently. Also, textile artist Amy Nguyen who creates Japanese designs; I met her last year at the Apple Store Genius Bar. I was also very psyched to discover, just today, photographer Alicia Savage whose “Morning Light” series I plan to do a follow up post on, and the chunky scarves and mittens by A Third Piece.

Fort Point Open Studios is free, and there is free parking too in the lot at A Street and Binford Streets. (Turn onto Binford Street from A Street towards the Channel, then turn left into the parking.) Head down there next weekend, and look for me.

ARTmonday: 18 Artworks From a Friend’s Collection

A friend of mine told me the other day that they sold their place around the corner and are moving to the suburbs. They feel like they’re ready to take on a house (she’s an interior designer after all) and that their two boys will really appreciate being able to run outside and play. Besides, their school is out there too.

So no more impromptu walks around the river or pizza in her front yard on Halloween (a big Back Bay event). No more calling over to see if my kids can shoot baskets in her courtyard. I hope the new owners keep up her gardens. The little front yards and window boxes are always well-planted.

Of course the interior is gorgeous. Comfortable, but very elegant and sophisticated, just what you’d expect of a Back Bay home of a designer with kids. My favorite part though, is her art collection. A mix of figurative and abstract, contemporary and more traditional, pieces by friends, local artists, and beyond. She has a great eye.

ARTmonday: 20 Original Affordable Artworks Under $500

I have a tendency to buy smaller works of art, because they are more affordable artwork and they’re easier to take in, and now, because we are running out of wall space. I’d love to get an oversize piece of statement art, particularly a photograph, or maybe an abstract, but it’s hard to devote thousands of dollars on a single luxury purchase (for me, anyway).

That said, money is no reason to live with bare walls or posters left over from college. There is so much affordable original artwork available online. You can buy small pieces whenever you find a bit of extra cash, or happen upon one you like, and over time, build up an impressive and eclectic gallery wall of art.

Here are 20 original affordable artworks available to buy at Saatchi Art, Etsy, UGallery, and Serena & Lily. They’re paintings, watercolors, and mixed media works; none are prints. It’s nice to be able to live with art on which you can see the artist’s hands; the texture, color varieties, and depth. Not that there is anything wrong with prints, mix those in too (there’s a shopping strip at the bottom of the post for prints under $150).
