Shopping: 1st Dibs’ Black and Chrome Room, $13,220

If only I had $13,220, I could put together this fabulous black & chrome room. As if that will ever happen. The crazy thing is, these pieces have all been reduced for the 1st Dibs Saturday Sale. At full price, the look comes to $21,741. Insane. Though, I do adore the 1950s Jules Leleu chandelier.

Trend Watch: A Walk on the Beach

Yes, I know I did a post about rocks recently. But those were fancy rocks, magnificent minerals. These here are just plain old stones. There’s also fan coral, branch coral, birch logs, and basic branches. The images are all from homes here in Boston, curated from interviews I did for interior design stories. Thought you might derive some inspiration, especially since it’s finally nice enough to venture outdoors.

If you have any earthy arrangements in your home, I’d love to see them. Please send pics! And I’ll work on taking shots of the ones I have in Truro.

Site Spotlight: Better Wall

Sometimes it’s worth perusing those little ads in the back of magazines. I blogged about Abode 7 a while back, a pretty decent home furnishings site I found buried in the depths of Dwell. There was another keeper back there too – Better Wall.  The company has been around for a few years, and garnered some press when it launched, but I’ve never seen it before. It’s a neat concept – they sell those huge banners that museums hang to announce special exhibitions. Obviously there is a limited supply, so you can bet nobody else you know will have one. While such fanfare might not fly in a center hall colonial or prewar co-op, I think the banners would be a great statement piece in a loft space. The subjects are diverse, from Mayan sculpture to urban architecture, Impressionist imagery to avant-garde videography. Here are some of their offerings:

Trend Watch: Rock Candy

Last week I illuminated how black & white made its way from the runway into the home. Another trend I highlighted in that article – “Fashion In the House” for the Boston Globe Sunday Magazine – was rocks and minerals. While jewelry and fashion designers are reveling in rough and chunky stones, interior designers are finding ways to bedeck rooms with earthy gems.

Let’s start with a peek at the Spring ‘o9 shows, where Burberry Prorsum, Marc Jacobs, and Roberto Cavalli were just a few of the designers rockin’ out.

How is this being translated on the home front? Here’s a gorgeous tableau of home accessories from Good, an exquisite boutique in Beacon Hill, Boston.

I’ve noticed a number of designers incorporating hefty hunks of shimmering, fantastical mineral specimens into interiors. They’re often pricey pieces, but quite magical. (And, a much more interesting and sophisticated take on the preppy Palm Beach coral display.) Boston-based interior designer Frank Roop has a number of beautiful minerals and chunky glass pieces scattered throughout his studio and condo. Home furnishing designers are crafting lamp bases from minerals. I’ve also noticed textile manufacturers getting in on the action, be it with granite-textured wall covering, or stone-like cut velvets.

I love the mineral specimens, and I absolutely adore the jewelry. I’ve put together some translations…
