Designer Spotlight: Kor Floral

Yesterday, interior designer Nikki Dalrymple of Acquire boutique in the North End emailed me about florist Alexandra Kadar and her business Kor Floral. Alexandra relocated to Boston from L.A, and already, party planner Bryan Rafanelli has scooped her up to do floral design for events. He’s a smartie – her work is gorgeous. Interesting too, as she opts for natural vessels and bases rather than a vase.

Acquire is hosting a “Spring Awakening” evening with installations from Kor Floral (and wine) on Friday, March 26th, from 6pm to 9pm. RSVP to Nikki at 857.362.7380.

For an interview with Alexandra, see La Tavola.

New pieces from Vermont ceramicist Laura Zindel are now in stock at Acquire.

Shop Alert: All Saints Spitalfields To Hit Newbury Street

Amidst the rash of Newbury Street closings I’ve unearthed some good news. All Saints Spitalfields is setting up shop in the space vacated by Pottery Barn earlier this year. A definite improvement.

What’s that? Well, I admit I had no idea ’til I went to the website a few minutes ago. It’s a British brand, with complete lines of women’s, men’s, and kids pieces, plus a few home accessories. There are boutiques in New York, L.A., and Miami, and lucky us, Boston’s next. The aesthetic is sort of steampunk meets Ralph; an earthier Madewell. And, coincidentally, its plaid and antler style is perfect for my blog this week, as I’ve got a series of hunting lodge chic pieces planned in the coming days.

Here’s a sampling of their offerings. I think we’re going to like this place!

Idea: Silver Tipped Bulb

I was catching up on my perusal of decor blogs when I saw this really cute light fixture this morning – actually an ingenious DIY idea – on Door 16.  You may have seen it already, since she posted it in January, but I somehow missed it until now.

This is one of those ubiquitous brass sconces found in many an old house (and all my college dorm rooms). Anna spray-painted the brass glossy white, for a porcelain-like appearance, then added an oversize silver-tipped bulb from 1000Bulbs.com. Totally cute. Makes me wish I had an ugly sconce to transform.

Shop Alert: Kitchen Arts Is Closing

So, it’s true. I walked by Kitchen Arts this morning after drop-off, and they’re indeed packing up and moving on.  I suppose they’ve had a good run – the store opened back in 1980. Guess we’ll have to trek over to Williams-Sonoma in Copley if we’re suddenly in need of a pie tin or silicone spatula.

Here’s the message on their website. Sounds like Newbury rents + recession booted them out of business:

“At the end of this month KitchenArts is closing it’s doors and leaving Newbury Street after nearly 30 years. Everything is on sale: merchandise, shelving, display tables, the works. Come on down, score some deals, and say goodbye to another independent retail store. Sale ends March 31, 2010. Everything must go.”
