Event Alert: Homemade: New York City

Homemade: New York City is a curated showcase of  hand-crafted products from a collection of New York artists, designers, and chefs that launches this weekend, September 24 – 26 in New York on the Lower East Side (139 Norfolk between Stanton and Rivington). There will be jewelry, clothing , housewares, and artisanal desserts. If I make it to New York a little early – I’m scheduled to go next week – I may just check it out.

Designer Spotlight: Madeline Weinrib Textiles as Clothing

Argentinean designer Soledad Twombly, designer of the label SOLE by Soledad Twombly, has just launched a new collection that incorporates the fabrics of  ikat queen, Madeline Weinrib.

The collection’s fifteen pieces celebrate Twombly’s love for exotic Central Asian textiles, mixing Weinrib’s signature handmade ikats with Twombly’s signature rich Italian fabrics like velvets.

There was a trunk show in NYC last week, and one is scheduled for Rome in early November.

Design Diary: CFDA Does The Aldyn

The new glass tower on the Upper West Side, The Aldyn (click through to the article on Curbed NY; it’s pretty funny) has invited designers to decorate a series of rooms on its 14th floor for a CFDA charity showhouse.

Tours of the rooms opened to the public today. Admission is $25 and benefits the CFDA Foundation.

Designer Spotlight: Diane von Furstenberg to Launch Home Textiles

Known for wrap dresses in a-mazing prints, Diane von Furstenberg has designed a line of textiles for the home. Some of the designs were previewed in this month’s Elle Decor. Really, what took her so long?

The colorful animal prints are fun, though I’d love to see some more original, global-inspired prints like the ones we saw on the runway the last couple of seasons. The stripes are not so interesting, but versatile for home decor, I suppose.

ARTmonday: Cindy Sherman for Balenciaga

In honor of New York Fashion Week, or rather, the end of the week (because really, who has time in the midst?), I couldn’t resist these images by über photographer Cindy Sherman.  For Fashion’s Night Out (Sept. 10), creative director of Balenciaga, Nicholas Ghesquière, hosted the U.S. debut of the show at the label’s flagship store in NYC’s Meatpacking District.  Cindy Sherman: Untitled (Balenciaga) is a six-photo series featuring the Sherman dressed as different fashion stereotypes (“the fashion victim,” “the aging doyenne,” etc.) fully outfitted in Balenciaga. I am totally loving the first image especially.
