Montage: Wicker

It’s all about texture. You can’t talk to a designer without he or she singing its praises. Texture adds depth and interest, and can warm up an otherwise sterile space. Wicker is pretty useful for this sort of thing. A longtime fixture on Granny’s front porch, wicker is being pulled inside in various incarnations, from the of-the-moment pouf to simple headboards to Victorianesque fan chairs. And just what does “wicker” mean? It’s actually not a fiber, but a process. Wicker pieces are woven from many a material, including rattan (an über strong vine), willow, reeds, or even synthetic composites. Here is a sampling of rooms with all sorts of wicker pieces.

  1. All of this wicker is fantastic. I particularly like the dark brown wicker bed, I think it’s gorgeous!

  2. Love the 2 canopy beds- those are amazing and so unique! Great post!

  3. I want a room like the last one on the right, love the wicker in there!

  4. I always associate wicker with beach houses and college apartments (but maybe that’s just because I had some old hand-me-down wicker in my own)….but these pictures definitely have me seeing wicker in a whole new light. Lovely pictures.

Averill, I totally know what you mean. I think of a wicker chest I used to store my sweaters in high school. And then there was the white wicker table in my first apt that my puppy ATE. But these looks are way more sophisticated.

  6. I just found your blog and I dig it! Enjoyed this post on wicker…I went into a Pier One today for the first time in about 5 years and saw that little wicker “poof” ottoman…LOVE IT! I kept seeing it in design mags but assumed they were vintage. Can’t wait to read more!
