Montage: 27 Little Boys’ Bedrooms

As my friend (and new interior design client) starts thinking about transitioning her two-year-old to a big boy bed (baby #2 is due in August), we’ve been exploring cute non-crib rooms for kids. I have a lot of photos of great rooms with two twin beds, but I’m holding those back for another time. These rooms are one-bed-only spaces, but include a mix of toddler beds, twins, and doubles.  Also, you won’t find any tired, kitschy kid themes here either. Sports bedrooms, sailboat bedrooms, no way. A well-designed room with human decor is the way to go.  A few might look familiar, but hopefully there are plenty of new rooms too.

Montage: 31 Freestanding Fireplaces

Although it hasn’t really been cold (at least in Boston), it is February, so if I’m going to post on fireplaces it seems like an appropriate time. I love the look (and functionality) of the freestanding gas fireplaces that have become so popular, especially the industrial aesthetic of the pipe. I don’t love the ones that hang from the ceiling. Some of these are probably wood stoves; some aren’t actually free-standing, but have a pipe instead of a traditional chimney. One’s even outdoors, which, admittedly is a whole different story.

Montage: 47 Living Rooms with Chandeliers and Pendants

The renovations are finally finished in our condo, save for a few odds and ends and two extra dining room tables in the living room. I should also get around to sourcing a living room chandelier. I had the electrician add a box and switch for one in the center of the living room, between the rows of recessed lights. I originally thought I’d like a vintage sputnik, possibly in brass, but now I’m not so sure. Obviously a glittering crystal chandelier isn’t my taste, and a Lindsey Adelman fixture is way out of my price range. So, what shall it be? I found some gorgeous specimens on 1st Dibs, but I’ll save those until tomorrow. Meanwhile, let’s look at 47 different living rooms with various options, from contemporary creations and vintage sputnik to lanterns and Chinoiserie.

Montage: Orange Aid

caperoom

ven though it will probably rain, we are going to the Cape this weekend. Despite the dreary weather, when you step into (or even just glimpse) my younger son’s bedroom, you can’t help but feel invigorated. In celebration of his favorite color, today’s post is all about orange.

The color’s made quite a comeback since the ’70s. (We had an orange and white shiny vinyl booth in our kitchen when I was in elementary school, to match the orange and gold oversize plaid wallpaper. Wish I had photos!) In the ’80s, orange was seen only in Burger Kings. (The color supposedly incites hunger.) These days, orange is considered hip, and is especially popular for kid’s rooms.

I wasn’t being purposefully trendy. My son declared orange his fave shade when he was about three and grabbed an orange mug in a housewares shop, and wouldn’t let go. I don’t know how long it will last (he’s seven now), but in the meantime, it’s definitely his signature shade.

Here are a handful of other spaces outfitted in orange:

Montage: Violet Interiors

ed-apri“Violet, you’re turning violet, Violet,” has always been one of my favorite lines from a movie. The sentiment is certainly fitting this season, as rosy purples, sweet lavenders, and deep aubergines persist in decidedly violet décors. I’m not a big pink person, and an overly obvious lavender feels a tad treacly, but violet, oh violet. Although violet was declared the new “it” color last year, Elle Decor is certainly still smitten (newest issue – April 2009 – on the left). And so am I.
