Montage: 17 Spaces with Sheepskin Rugs

Although I’m not a big animal skin fan, I do love the cozy feel of a woolly sheepskin rug underfoot. I recently went to IKEA and picked up one each for my sons’ bedrooms; now it’s the first thing their little feet hit when they touch the floor. (I was tempted by the gray versions for the sofa, but more on that tomorrow.) One of my sons pleaded the extra large one, so he could put it atop his bed so he could sleep directly on it, but I thought things would get a little too sweaty. I think I may need one for my side of the bed on the Cape. They really do feel delicious.

Designer Spotlight: David Hicks

I recently worked with Ashley Hicks, designer and son of legendary designer David Hicks, on an article for eBay’s new lifestyle site, The Inside Source, “Ashley Hicks on His Father, David,” to promote his new book, David Hicks: A Life of Design. The book is worth an actual read, rather than a simple flip to look at the pretty pictures.

What struck me most, besides Hicks’ incredibly privileged, glam lifestyle, was how many of his design innovations endured. A number of features seen in his room throughout the ’60s and ’70s, are au courant today.

Montage: Twin Beds

As we head into summer, I’ve been making plans with friends to visit me on the Cape. I’ll be out there full time starting mid-June , and I’ll no doubt be craving company. (On the bright side, I’ll have plenty of time to blog.) In any case, summer means summer houses, which means visitors, which means guest rooms. Here is a collection of rooms outfitted with two beds. Some are shared kids’ rooms, but most are spaces appropriate for grown ups, and plenty lovely enough to consider spending the night.

Escapes: Post Ranch Inn, Big Sur

I learned about the Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur, a heavenly spot on the edge of the earth (or at least the West Coast) from interior designer, Robin Pelissier, who owns a design business and little shop called Robin’s Nest in downtown Hingham, Mass. I had been soliciting suggestions for romantic honeymoon spots for “The Lovers’ Go-To Guide” in the Boston Globe Sunday Magazine’s Valentine Day issue. While Big Sur had always connoted the great outdoors to me (i.e., hiking, bird watching, etc.), I was never much interested. But this is a spa, and an altogether different story.
