Montage: 38 Rooms with Long-Armed Sconces

A few years ago it was the bare bulb. Now everyone’s hanging these super spindly sconces in unexpected places (and sometimes they even have bare bulbs). Over sinks and sofas, from beams, and reaching straight across kitchens, they’re an interesting element, and certainly functional. Some have a mid-century Italian twist, others are more industrial work horses. I guess I like them, though it’s not exactly easy to install a sconce on a whim. I wonder if those who are incorporating them into current projects will feel like they’re trendy/dated in a couple of years. Time will tell. In the meantime, I like them, even if they look like they might reach out and grab you.

Montage: 50 (More) Green Rooms

I posted 40 Green Rooms back in the summer of 2009, so it’s time for an update, especially since Saturday is St. Patrick’s Day. (Not that I’m Irish, but green is my favorite color.) Mint green is trending in fashion, but unfortunately, I didn’t come across many mint green interiors in my photo archives. Maybe that’s a whole other post down the line. Montage: 47 Living Rooms with Chandeliers and Pendants

The renovations are finally finished in our condo, save for a few odds and ends and two extra dining room tables in the living room. I should also get around to sourcing a living room chandelier. I had the electrician add a box and switch for one in the center of the living room, between the rows of recessed lights. I originally thought I’d like a vintage sputnik, possibly in brass, but now I’m not so sure. Obviously a glittering crystal chandelier isn’t my taste, and a Lindsey Adelman fixture is way out of my price range. So, what shall it be? I found some gorgeous specimens on 1st Dibs, but I’ll save those until tomorrow. Meanwhile, let’s look at 47 different living rooms with various options, from contemporary creations and vintage sputnik to lanterns and Chinoiserie.

Montage: 45 Rooms with Sideboards

I’ve been really interested in sideboards lately, especially Danish modern ones. While my first inclination for a sideboard is to skip the furniture altogether and build one in, the pieces are actually quite good looking, useful, and can be gotten at a good deal, particularly on eBay. It’s quite the grown up piece of furniture—a sideboard implies you have a second set of fancy dishes to store or highball glasses. And then there’s the need to artfully arrange a display on top, and hang a mirror or artwork. If you have a dining room, or a spacious living room that needs filler, definitely consider one. Here are a bunch of ideas on how to incorporate a sideboard into your decor.

Montage: 43 Rooms with Floor Lamps

For years now I’ve shunned the floor lamp. Although my earliest memories of the floor lamp is the groovy arc of the ’70s (that will get its own montage post later), more recently it’s the ugly black halogen floor lamp with brass trim and glass shade of the late ’80s / early ’90s, that haunts me. Too many associations of bad ’80s furniture and Jennifer Convertibles sofas post-college graduation. Of course, that was decades ago at this point, and it’s time to get over it.

The floor lamps of today are super chic, though like most styles, they reference the past. I particularly love the ’50s Italian styles in bright color metals or plain black. Simple contemporary designs with oversize shades work for me too. I actually just ordered a simple floor lamp for our newly designed family room. We’ll see how it works out once it arrives. (Unfortunately a vintage piece from 1st Dibs was hardly in the budget; alas a style on sale at OLighting must suffice.)
