Montage: 64 Rooms with Black and White Art

I’ve been really drawn to black and white abstract artworks recently. For instance, I could really go for a Franz Kline. OK, so that isn’t likely, but there are plenty of alternatives, and designers are incorporating them into interiors rather a lot of late. From misshapen ink blots and robust geometrics to feathery woodcuts and simple hand-drawn forms, black and white artworks elevate the sophistication level of a room.

I love the look, but I’ve found myself hesitating when confronted with the opportunity to purchase such a piece. Maybe the thought of laying out a lot of money for such simplicity is not as exciting as taking ownership of something bright and shiny. But let’s be serious, that could end up being the difference between something trendy from Forever 21 or a beautifully tailored Armani. No comparison. Happily, we recently purchased a pair of drawings that resemble thread. I had them matted and framed and they look fantastic. (I’ll try to post a photo later today.)

Montage: 45 Rooms with Sideboards

I’ve been really interested in sideboards lately, especially Danish modern ones. While my first inclination for a sideboard is to skip the furniture altogether and build one in, the pieces are actually quite good looking, useful, and can be gotten at a good deal, particularly on eBay. It’s quite the grown up piece of furniture—a sideboard implies you have a second set of fancy dishes to store or highball glasses. And then there’s the need to artfully arrange a display on top, and hang a mirror or artwork. If you have a dining room, or a spacious living room that needs filler, definitely consider one. Here are a bunch of ideas on how to incorporate a sideboard into your decor.

Montage: 43 Rooms with Floor Lamps

For years now I’ve shunned the floor lamp. Although my earliest memories of the floor lamp is the groovy arc of the ’70s (that will get its own montage post later), more recently it’s the ugly black halogen floor lamp with brass trim and glass shade of the late ’80s / early ’90s, that haunts me. Too many associations of bad ’80s furniture and Jennifer Convertibles sofas post-college graduation. Of course, that was decades ago at this point, and it’s time to get over it.

The floor lamps of today are super chic, though like most styles, they reference the past. I particularly  love the ’50s Italian styles in bright color metals or plain black. Simple contemporary designs with oversize shades work for me too. I actually just ordered a simple floor lamp for our newly designed family room. We’ll see how it works out once it arrives. (Unfortunately a vintage piece from 1st Dibs was hardly in the budget; alas a style on sale at OLighting must suffice.)

Montage: X-Stools

As I may have mentioned, I’m in the midst of redecorating my bedroom and the room formerly known as the playroom. (Once kids are 8 they don’t need toys anymore, right?) This weekend the floors on our the main level are being refinished. The paint colors are chosen and the main pieces of furniture ordered. There are even a few key accessories waiting patiently to be placed. But I still need a couple of medium-sized items, like side tables and poufs or ottomans. I snagged three microsuede storage cubes at Target for $17.99 last week, in my exact colors (turquoise, violet, chartreuse).  Super cute and totally cheap. (Plus, the Star Wars costumes all fit inside one. Take that Vader.) To accompany the bedroom sofa, I’m debating between two of the same cubes in charcoal, a metallic silver leather pouf, or two X-stools covered in crisp white cotton duck, just like the sofa. An X-stool is incredibly practical  – it’s an extra seat, an ottoman, or topped with a tray, a side table. It’s also one of the earliest forms of furniture. In addition to its versatility and portability, I love its symmetry. It works in pretty much every room, and never fails to look great, and sometimes even pulls together an otherwise faltering space. Have a look at these rooms to see what I mean.
