Montage: Wall Sculptures

Since I’ve been writing a lot about Frank Roop lately, I’ve become a bit obsessed with Curtis Jere wall sculptures. A couple of weeks ago, while sitting innocently on the sofa with my computer, I began searching for examples online. 1st Dibs, too expensive, obviously. Ebay, full of options. I cavalierly bid on about half a dozen different Curtis Jere and Curtis Jere-inspired sculptures of the leafy variety. (I’ve been particularly taken with the spray of trees Frank put in this little Morroccan reading nook in Nantucket. I like the “raindrops” style too, but they’re pretty pricey.) I’ve bid on stuff before. Never won a thing. So maybe the economy isn’t so great right now. Maybe people aren’t shopping wildly for vintage metal artworks. OK, so I won four auctions. New sculptures have been arriving pretty much daily. I’ll photograph them and give you a preview later this week. Maybe you’d like one for your own house? Here are some images for inspiration.

The one that started it all.

Montage: The Barcelona Chair

I seem to have a thing for chairs, especially mid-century modern ones. I can’t stop collecting photographs of them. I’ve  already done a montage of the Bertoia diamond chair, and I’ve been hording images of the Eames lounge, the Saarinen tulip chair, and the Panton chair. Today I must be feeling a bit subdued  (summer’s not my season) since I’ve chosen Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chair. It’s an absolute classic, obviously, and works pretty much anywhere, but interestingly, as you’ll see, almost all the interiors that include the chair (or chairs, as they’re most often seen in pairs) are rather quiet, neutral, formal even, in the strict modern sense. I don’t particularly lust after the Barcelona chair, though I would love a Barcelona daybed upholstered in white leather. Anyway, here’s what I found:

And, my favorite, the Barcelona daybed in white . . .

Montage: Orange Aid

caperoom

ven though it will probably rain, we are going to the Cape this weekend. Despite the dreary weather, when you step into (or even just glimpse) my younger son’s bedroom, you can’t help but feel invigorated. In celebration of his favorite color, today’s post is all about orange.

The color’s made quite a comeback since the ’70s. (We had an orange and white shiny vinyl booth in our kitchen when I was in elementary school, to match the orange and gold oversize plaid wallpaper. Wish I had photos!) In the ’80s, orange was seen only in Burger Kings. (The color supposedly incites hunger.) These days, orange is considered hip, and is especially popular for kid’s rooms.

I wasn’t being purposefully trendy. My son declared orange his fave shade when he was about three and grabbed an orange mug in a housewares shop, and wouldn’t let go. I don’t know how long it will last (he’s seven now), but in the meantime, it’s definitely his signature shade.

Here are a handful of other spaces outfitted in orange:

Montage: 36 Rooms with Bookshelves

Almost nothing makes me happier than a pile of books. Some people keep a stash of chocolate in the back of the cupboard (okay, I do that too); I get nervous when my row of unread books gets too short. Here are homes whose owners also seem to revel in reading.
