Design Diary: Desk Refresh for Zooming

Are you still Zoom-ing? Did you re-adjust your workspace to make it easier?I know you spruced up your backgrounds (I hope so anyway), but what about the nuts and bolts of the computer and iPhone situations?

When StyleCarrot partner (and Boston-based company) Wayfair suggested we collaborate on a sponsored office envy post for a desk refresh this fall, I realized it was time to ditch my yoga blocks and other precarious props for more stable desk accessories

I found a couple of desk accessories on Wayfair that allow me to work remotely with ease (and beauty). As you’ll see from the images, I did not need a desk or desk chair, but I discovered some tech accoutrements in the school furniture and business furniture sections. And I certainly took up the opportunity to prettify the decor.

Here’s the setup in my workspace. When I’m recording a webinar, which I prefer to do in my dining room, I can easily bring my new laptop lift and collapsible phone stand downstairs. (And, I use it by my bedstand at night.) The faceted vase makes the trip too, looking gorgeous in my art and floral-filled background.

Get the Look: 30 Rattan Mirrors from Bohemian to Coastal

Were you feeling inspired by the patio makeover by Robin M. Anderson I posted last time? I mean seriously, how could you not be? We didn’t use our patio as much as we might have this summer, but now that there’s a slight chill, we’re making use of the gas fire pit we added earlier this year.

I posted shopping sources for the post, but the rattan mirror is such a fun touch, and so versatile, that I wanted to elaborate. You can go total boho with a rattan mirror, or use a more tailored rattan mirror to just add a touch of texture to a more formal space. A swirly rattan mirror would look adorable in a little girl’s room and a rattan mirror with an Art Deco vibe can infuse style and function to an entry. Perhaps your teen would like a rattan mirror in the shape of an evil eye.

Scheming: Patio Makeover by Robin M. Anderson

What do you do when you have a decrepit screened porch that you just don’t need? Robin M. Anderson counseled her clients to dismantle it and transform the square footage into an outdoor room. I wrote about this patio makeover by Boston designer Robin M. Anderson for Boston Globe Magazine this summer, and have been meaning to share it.

Tonight my husband and I cranked up the gas fire pit and shared wine and ginger flank steak rice bowls on our patio, thus reminding me to get this online already. I’m guessing Robin’s clients are getting cozy by the outdoor fireplace right about now. That fall chill is definitely in the New England air.

Collaborating with Boston architect Diane Lim of Lim Design Studio, Robin transformed uninsulated, little used indoor space to an often enjoyed outdoor haven. Removing the walls had a bonus effect too—sunlight now streams into the home’s entry.

While the brick of the patio was pre-existing, Robin filled in the area under the roof with bluestone pavers, creating an outdoor rug. The beadboard ceiling stayed in place (there’s a room above).

For furniture, Robin channeled her bohemian tendencies with the client’s traditional New England tastes for a coastal california appeal that is as stylish as it is family-friendly. A piece of salvaged wood from Fan Pier in Boston adds age to the chimney and hanging ferns make the whole tableau look lush.

Just In: Kara Mann x CB2 Furniture Collection

I’ve long admired interior designer Kara Mann. I was able to work on a story or two with her back when she was based in Chicago. She’s since moved to New York City, and no surprise, has become an interior superstar.

The Kara Mann x CB2 collection just dropped. Kara Mann was inspired by her 1980s childhood in designing the 74-piece collection of furniture and accessories. The high contrast collection is simultaneously edgy and feminine, with the tiniest touch of boho. Silhouettes have some Art Deco influences and even a hint of Shabby Chic.
