Casa Bohemia: The Spanish Style House by Linda Leigh Paul (Rizzoli 2015) showcases 29 bohemian style homes—vibrant, Spanish-style houses in the southwestern and southern United States, Mexico, and Spain, from restored haciendas in Mexico to early and recent 20th century California mission styles. Rich colors abound and details include ornate wrought-iron, wood balconies, graceful arches, crafted glass, and patterned tiles and textiles.

My mother-in-law introduced me to the fanciful marine-inspired art of New York City artist Sarah Lutz when over Thanksgiving 2012 she brought me to the the Miranda Arts Project Space to see the installation Interplay, a collaborative work by Beth Dary and Sarah Lutz. This marine-inspired art installation mapped out the sea levels of Port Chester, New York waterways—past, present, and future—using sculpture, painting, drawing, and collage. I loved it; the overall concept and look, and the close-in details. (You can see my blog post about it here.)
I’ve since met Sarah Lutz on the Cape, where she spends summers, and have been tempted by her pieces at Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill. Her current exhibition Tales from the Garden . . . And Other Mythologies is currently on display the Mercy Gallery at the Loomis Chaffee School, where Lutz is an alum. The scale of the pieces is much larger, thanks to the freedom she found in her new, larger studio.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I’ve partnered with T.J.Maxx to give away one $50 gift card. I also received $50 gift card for myself to stock up on must-have items that help make my complicated life a little bit easier. Yesterday I headed to the T.J.Maxx at Fresh Pond in Cambridge for a few kitchen essentials.
With the amount of fruit and vegetables we go through here (two fast-sprouting teenagers!), we are always short on knives and mini colanders. Plus, now that these guys are old enough to fend for themselves, they’ve been doing quite a bit of cooking on their own. One has mastered the art of the chocolate chip cookie. The other is angling for his own set of knives and a knife roll, after having successfully completed a number of complicated chicken dishes as well as French onion soup.
Teaching the boys to cook means I can spend more time working (or watching Friday Night Lights). Plus, they’ll be able to impress chicks, and hopefully keep up healthy eating habits too. #MaxxMoms

A million years ago, we offloaded our television in the living room, leaving an extra roomy could-be bar cabinet free and clear. It soon became a convenient space, given its boxy shape, to store art we weren’t displaying, extra picture frames, and overflow throw pillows. A television has since taken up residence again with a new DVD player, specifically for me to watch movies (since I don’t know how to work the main TV with its fifty-buttoned five remotes), or currently, Friday Night Lights (OMG, Tim Riggins).
I had the best intentions; I imagined transforming the newly vacant slot, complete with pull-out shelf, into a stylish home bar cabinet for my husband. I thought about it a lot, knowing it would make a much appreciated birthday gift. But no follow through from me. Instead, liquor bottles remain relegated to the upper cabinet of the pantry, with some of the more attractive specimens on display atop the would-be bar cabinet in a teal lacquer bar tray, provided by the lovely ladies at an agency for Absolut. So, woe is my husband’s home bar situation. Jon Draper he shall never be.
