ARTmonday: Mario Rossi’s Geometrically Deconstructed Photos

Having made a quick trip to Manhattan over the weekend for a friend’s BIG birthday, I’m definitely in a city state-of-mind.

While all of Naples-born, Rome-based photographer Mario Rossi‘s photographs aren’t necessarily taken smack in the middle of a city, the deconstructed, cubist compositions echo the framework of a skyscraper. Rossi indeed cites geometry as integral to his photography, putting forth that his forms are repeated with an attention to mathematics and music, as though viewed through a kaleidoscope.

Here are 12 examples of Mario Rossi’s colorful, geometrically deconstructed photos.

ARTmonday: Apple Artworks

Today is Rosh Hashanah, the first day of the Jewish New Year. One of the traditions Jews observe is to dip apples into honey to signify the sweetness of a new year. In celebration of the new year, here are 14 apple artworks.

Included are self portraits by two of my favorite Boston photographers (I don’t think either is Jewish), Japanese sculpture, a young Mick Jagger (not Jewish), and more traditional apple still lifes. Shana Tovah!

One can’t consider of apple artwork without Rene Magritte.

ARTmonday: Andy Mattern

I spotted this series of remote control photographs by Andy Mattern recently. I find them quite appealing, although in real life I can’t stand remote controls. Our television setup includes five remote controls, each with 50 buttons. That means an infinite number of combinations and no hope of my ever being able to watch TV.

Mattern, who was born and is based in Albuquerque says, “Remote is a series of five photographs that considers the problem of needing several remote controls to complete a single task. To invert the power relationship between operator and machine, the remotes hover and point directly at the viewer.”

Mattern’s remote control still lifes, shot on plain colored backgrounds date from 2009. They’re available as 22″x17″ archival pigment ink prints in editions of 10 for $850 framed through Uprise Art.
