ARTmonday: Hilary Tait Norod

I first learned about Boston-based artist Hilary Tait Norod through her dad, an architect at Elkus Manfredi when I was working on a story for the Boston Globe about transforming old buildings into home.

Since then I’ve had the pleasure of working with her on the  Webster Art Project at Boston Design Center. There are currently three of her paintings in the Webster & Company showroom (one sold!)

Hilary Tait Norod’s solos show “Are You Crazy With Me?” opens this weekend, Saturday, April 16th, 5pm – 9pm at Jerome Street Studios in Medford, Mass. Hilary’s new body of work is inspired by studies of the human mind. The series focuses  specifically on the theories behind the correlation between insanity and creativity.

Norod presents a series of mixed media paintings that evolved from portraiture studies of brilliant minds who have walked the line of insanity into more abstract pieces of her own theories, experiences, and explorations.

Here is a preview of her new paintings:

Poe

Men have called me mad; but the question is not yet settled, whether madness is or is not the loftiest intelligence– whether much that is glorious– whether all that is profound– does not spring from disease of thought– from moods of mind exalted at the expense of the general intellect. —Edgar Allen Poe

Scheming: Neon Bedroom Decor

A friend, fixated on a khaki linen pillow with neon trim that she saw a while back, has been searching for neon accents to decorate a bedroom in a summer house. (No, neon decor isn’t dead.)

She enlisted me on a hunt for said pillows. In my guilt of being unable to produce (they’re no longer made), I assembled an alternative scheme. Here is an array of neon accents for the bedroom from StyleCarrot partners and others that are bright, fresh, and cheery.

ARTmonday: 15 Pieces from the MassArt Auction 2016

On Saturday night I went to Montserrat College of Art Artageous30! auction. Of course we came home with two pieces, but more importantly we had a really great time, and hopefully the school raised a lot of scholarship money.

The venue and food were terrific, as were the artists who worked throughout the space during the evening. We’re definitely going back next year, despite the schlep up to Gloucester. I’m hoping we can round up a whole Boston contingent. Perhaps a party bus?

In the meantime, I’m gearing up for the MassArt Auction this Saturday, April 9th, 2016. It will also be my first time attending this one. I can tell already it is going to be nearly impossible to come home empty handed, though I hear the prices can get steep. Tickets to the event are sold out, but you can easily bid online at Paddle8. I certainly already started.

Here are 15 of my top picks at the MassArt Auction this year. Online bidding ends Friday, April 8th; bids transfer to live event unless you choose the Buy It Now option.
