Get the Look: 20 Modern Outdoor Planters

We have two bluestone patios right outside our house on the Cape; one in the front, and a smaller one in the back. The back one faces a little rose garden, meant to echo the larger rose garden “up the hill,” as we say, at my in laws house. Theirs was planted in honor of my husband’s grandmother, Florine. Unlike the front garden, in which I only allow white and blue/purple flowers (yes, the guy who plants the flowers and helps weed thinks I’m crazy), the back garden has yellow roses, coral roses, and violet roses. (I had the pink ones replanted at my in laws because the color was annoying me.)

I had always planned to do low, long modern planters on the perimeter of the bluestone patio in the back, which is outside the guest rooms. Instead, that patio is sad and deserted (except for the roses, of course). My brother-in-law is getting married in Provincetown this summer (to a woman, just in case you’re wondering, given the locale), and much of the bride’s family will be staying at the house. This has motivated me to once again start thinking about enhancing the patios with modern planters.

While the funky, colorful ones are fun, they’re not really right. We’ll need minimalist planters with clean lines, planted with architectural forms, I think. No floppy pink pansies in terracotta troughs allowed. I’m thinking succulents and spiky grasses. I already grow some herbs in a vegetable garden (with our lone vegetable—or fruit rather—cherry tomatoes).

As for the front patio, given the lounge chairs and the view, we’re all set. Maybe the entry porch could use a pair of medium-sized planters as a welcome. Maybe brightly colored, planters could work there. Of course I’ll have to order all of this online; local garden shops only carry the usual traditional style planters. Yawn.

Here are 20 modern outdoor planters, most of which will work indoors too.

ARTmonday: Hunt Slonem

Artist Hunt Slonem, who was born in Kittery, is best known for his paintings of tropical birds, though he also does butterflies and bunnies. His bird paintings are often based on the 30-100 birds of various species that he keeps in his own aviary at his studio.

DTR Modern Galleries, a fine art gallery specializing in modern and contemporary masters, which is on Newbury Street in Boston (with additional locations in Palm Beach, D.C., and NYC) represents Hunt Slonem, and often has his work in the window. It’s around the corner from the elementary school my son went to, as well right next to Starbucks, so I’ve seen it often.

Earlier this year, Victor Oliveira, the former Retail Operations Director at the ICA Store, emailed me to say he’d landed at DTR Modern Galleries as a, and that I should come by. Now that temps have thawed, and I’ve taken to wandering the neighborhood again, I did. Not just because I wanted to say hi, but because I was quite drawn to the cockatoo painting in the window.

Turns out there’s currently a Hunt Slonem show at DTR Modern. This Friday, May 16 is the opening reception, and Slonem will be there to celebrate his new work and his new book, Bunnies. (The gallery sent me home with a copy, so I’ll have to go back to have it signed.) Many of the pieces were already hung, so I took plenty of photos, below. I’ve added images of other new pieces here too.

Just In: ClockONE

ClockONE is an ultrathin, oversize clock inspired by the capabilities of E Ink electronic paper displays; you know, like your Kindle. It’s pure design meets technology, developed by Andy Mitchelides, founder of Twelve24, a tech company based in Boston, in collaboration with Chris Lenart of San Francisco-based Lenart Studios.

ClockONE is one meter long, 4mm thin, weighs less than four pounds, and will run for one year on a single coin cell battery. The controls are super simple, and it can be attached to the wall with a magnetic mounting system that uses one screw and requires no level. Plus, it comes in a handful of colors.

It’s very Dwell. I can totally see it ending up on that hysterical parody Tumblr, Fuck Your Noguchi Coffee Table. (What? You don’t know this? You must check it out.) I would love to set ClockONE on the built-in sideboard of our house on the Cape. Since we’ve resisted filling the big white walls with art, this would be a great graphic alternative. On the other hand, not sure we have that B I G of a need to keep track of time out there.

ClockONE will be available in September for $499. You can preorder it here
