ARTmonday: Caitlin McGauley

You’ve probably seen Caitlin McGauley’s work without even realizing it. She’s done sassy watercolors for Lonny and limited edition prints of luscious interiors for Kate Spade, and even portraits on the spot for chichi style events in New York. Her work is as appealing as her own visage—pretty, spirited, and stylish. She captures the likenesses of strangers on the street, well-known fashion icons, elephants in India, tasseled necklaces, charming foodstuffs, and rooms galore, which are my definite favorites.

While most of her limited edition prints are sold out, you can get an almost daily dose of her cheerful renditions of everyday life on her blog, Caitlin’s Sketchbook.

Montage: 27 Little Boys’ Bedrooms

As my friend (and new interior design client) starts thinking about transitioning her two-year-old to a big boy bed (baby #2 is due in August), we’ve been exploring cute non-crib rooms for kids. I have a lot of photos of great rooms with two twin beds, but I’m holding those back for another time. These rooms are one-bed-only spaces, but include a mix of toddler beds, twins, and doubles.  Also, you won’t find any tired, kitschy kid themes here either. Sports bedrooms, sailboat bedrooms, no way. A well-designed room with human decor is the way to go.  A few might look familiar, but hopefully there are plenty of new rooms too.

Montage: 54 Living Rooms with Gray Sofas

I apologize for missing two days of blogging. I took a quick day trip to Connecticut to visit a friend. A friend who has so much faith in my taste that she has hired me to decorate her gorgeous new apartment in New York City. You didn’t realize that I’m an interior designer? I’m not! This very loyal friend is confident that through my writing and research, experience overseeing the building and renovations of my own places, and years of absorbing interior images, that I can do this. Or rather, we can do this. It’s definitely a collaboration. And really fun.

The project doesn’t involve any construction, kitchens, or bathrooms. The apartment is brand new and will be delivered finished and pristine. We  will pick paint colors, wallpapers, rugs, and furniture. The budget is similar to what I would spend if it were my own home, which makes it a lot easier. I’m nervous, but excited.

We’ve decided to go with a gray sofa in her living room. We’re thinking about a serene white and gray scheme, or white and gray with green accents. The dining room is in the same space, so we can play with that too. I’m sure I’ll be treating you to a lot of posts inspired by our deliberations and eventual decisions.

Montage: 40 Painted Built-In Bookshelves (Blue, Green, Black, Yellow, Orange, Red, Purple . . .)

I love the richness of the painted woodwork in these rooms. The tones are of course, much deeper than I would dare to go in my own home. Most of the time. A couple of years ago, inspired by such shelving, I actually had my husband paint the built-in bookcases in our family room a deep purple. It wasn’t awful, but it wasn’t great either. We’ve since gone back to white, with taupey greige walls, compliments of the whole family room re-do. But still, it doesn’t stop me from admiring the work of designers accomplished enough to pull it off, particularly Katie Ridder, who does it with great panache, in monochromatic and highly contrasty spaces, and also, Miles Redd. Which colors do you love best?

Montage: 64 Rooms with Black and White Art

I’ve been really drawn to black and white abstract artworks recently. For instance, I could really go for a Franz Kline. OK, so that isn’t likely, but there are plenty of alternatives, and designers are incorporating them into interiors rather a lot of late. From misshapen ink blots and robust geometrics to feathery woodcuts and simple hand-drawn forms, black and white artworks elevate the sophistication level of a room.

I love the look, but I’ve found myself hesitating when confronted with the opportunity to purchase such a piece. Maybe the thought of laying out a lot of money for such simplicity is not as exciting as taking ownership of something bright and shiny. But let’s be serious, that could end up being the difference between something trendy from Forever 21 or a beautifully tailored Armani. No comparison. Happily, we recently purchased a pair of drawings that resemble thread. I had them matted and framed and they look fantastic. (I’ll try to post a photo later today.)
