Montage: 27 Rooms with Ladders

Ladders have been popular in interiors for a while now, not just to access books, but in bathrooms as towel racks. Even stepladders have been appropriated, sometimes with a tray on top, as side tables. To accompany my piece,  “Trendlet: Ladders” on The Inside Source, I’ve put together an expanded montage of ladder decor.

Fine Print: Designers’ Homes in CFDA Book

WWD reports that the CFDA (that’s the Council of Fashion Designers of America for those of you not in the fashion know) and glossy book publisher Assouline are publishing American Fashion Designers at Home, a coffee-table book that will showcase homes from over 100 of its members. It’s due out in September ($65, to benefit the CFDA Foundation), though it’s featured on neither Amazon nor Assouline’s own site yet.

Glimpses will include new and yes, we’ve seen them before images, including Carolina Herrera UES (that’s Upper East Side for you non-New Yorkers) co-op, Donna Karan’s Parrot Cay guest house, Josie Natori’s Paris pied-à-terre, Diane von Furstenberg’s Cloudwalk estate in Litchfield County, Ralph Lauren’s Double RL ranch in Telluride, Mark Badgley and James Mischka’s horse farm in the rolling Kentucky hills, Lela Rose’s TriBeCa loft, and Bob Mackie’s vibrant L.A. pad. And, of course, no fashion décor tome would be complete without Jenna Lyons’ Park Slope brownstone.

Here are the images online at WWD. I contacted the publicists at Assouline, begging for more . . .

Angel Sanchez’s Mondrian-inspired living room.

The roof deck of Elie Tahari’s triplex in Soho , complete with family.

The guest house at Donna Karan’s Parrot Cay retreat in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Montage: 23 Wall Installations

I’ve been really interested in the idea of wall installations lately; a natural progression after last year’s obsession with wall sculptures. While you can use pretty much anything to create pattern and texture to blank walls, the ones I’m most attracted to are the art works. ( I have an ‘everyday objects as wall art’ post in the works as well). A few months ago I blogged about Tracy Melton’s tree ring encaustic paintings I purchased on Etsy. We finally hung them yesterday and they look fantastic – the picture is below. (My lack of photography, lighting and styling skills don’t do the installation justice.) I had planned on lining them up in a grid, but my ever artistic husband (he has a knack, surprisingly), insisted they’d look better scattered. Like ’em?

Design Diary: John Stefanon at FP3

This is a model apartment in the loft building FP3 in Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood. Like the other FP3 space I blogged about last fall, the interior design was done, and beautifully, by John Stefanon of JFS Design Studio.

Stefanon incorporates earthy elements, like this rough hewn table, into the dining area. The chairs are on casters so they can be easily transported during a party.

This is the standard kitchen. Love the addition of the blackboard, both as a design and practical element. The cloudy glass cabinetry provides a bit of airy relief from the opaque panels. Adding just one section is a lot cheaper than doing all the upper cabinets in that style, but makes a noticeable impact.

Branches in a vase – always an easy way to bring the outdoors in. The pink artwork provides a splash of sweet, candy color to an otherwise neutral palette.

I love hte wood veneer pocket door between the hall and the media room. The aerial map photo is great too. The plexiglass shelf provides storage without looking bulky.

A hand-drawn type of patterning on the wall covering is a modern update to a classic plaid.

The crisp, upholsterd headboard fits trimly in the small space.

I adore the wavy front of this white lacquered dresser.

An amazing red wall in the media room gives an unexpected zing. And that enormous mirror really opens up the room. The effect reminds me of a wall with a circular doorway at the university in Taiwan where I once studied.

Montage: 27 Interiors with Ikat Prints & Suaznis

The i k a t trend is holding fast and furious. So much so that Elle Decor, which has been touting the look for years (House Beautiful is a huge fan too), devoted a page to it in the front of the book this month. I promise to put a product post together too, but first, a collection of rooms with ikat elements, with some suzani thrown in. You’ve probably seen a lot of these before, but hopefully there are some new images too.
