Montage: 30 Spaces with Sputnik Chandeliers

I’m not really all about retro, but I am loving sputnik chandeliers. (Though I wonder if the trend will be too over soon. These days it’s really about the raw light bulb.) Chunky chrome anemone fixtures, spiky brass models, expansive hand blown glass designs, and crystal floret-adorned vintage beauties are all still on my mind. I’m thinking an amazing, somewhat intricate eBay find would add glamour to my soon-to-be-in-the-works living room. (Of course, I’d need to hire an electrician.) While I’m at it, a sleeker model might be just the finishing touch my bedroom needs. I must do an accompanying “Get the Look” post to this montage. Stay tuned. (A post on exposed light bulbs is also in progress.)

ARTmonday: John Goodman

I first learned about photographer John Goodman from Sharon Kitchens of Delicious Musings, who owns one of his pieces. He has a show, along with two other photographers in Boston this month (see details on previous post), so I finally perused his works. I love them. Very evocative, a bit gritty, and beautiful. These are my favorites among the images from the Howard Yezerski Gallery website.

ARTmonday: Boston Combat Zone

Sharon Kitchens of Delicious Musings sent over this invite for the opening of the photography show “Boston Combat Zone 1969 – 1978” featuring the work of John Goodman, Jerry Berndt, and Roswell Angier at the Howard Yezerski Gallery in Boston’s South End. Goodman’s photos are quite evocative. (I haven’t looked at the others yet.) I’ll post more images later today.

Design Diary: Jane Austen’s Emma

Romola Garai and Johnny Lee Miller

I never considered myself a Jane Austen fanatic. Until now. As my friend Meredith can attest, I’ve been “mildly obsessed.” PBS is airing a new Masterpiece Classic adaptation of Emma. I was so riveted that I asked WGBH (who knew Masterpiece Classic was produced right here in Boston?) to set up interviews with the so very talented production and costume designers, Stevie Herbert and Rosalind Ebbutt.

Not only did they arrange the chats, they messengered me the complete DVD. (Love the perks. LOVE Mr. Knightly even more. And Hartfield house, well, just wait and see.) Then I turned my fascination into two pieces for The Inside Source: “Emma’s Design Inspiration” and  “Jane Austen Era Fashion.”

Stevie Herbert and Rosalind Ebbutt were absolutely delightful and full of information on their inspirations and mindset in creating the scenes and styles. I’m not going to retell all their tidbits here (please click through to the articles for that), but will show you snippets of the gorgeous Regency rooms I grabbed from the video online.
