ARTmonday: John Tremblay

Over the weekend, just as I settled into my spot and prepared to be brilliantly productive, my husband started sending me links to condos for sale in the neighborhood. No, we’re not actually moving, probably not anyway, but I have been complaining about this and that around here, and he was bored, waiting for the boys to be through with their tennis lesson, and that’s how he chose to pass the time. Anyway, I was so moved to distraction, that I could no longer concentrate. So, I started to clean, well, organize. I came across a handful of glossy brochures from Phaidon excerpting new titles, including Painting Abstraction: New Elements in Abstract Painting by Bob Nickas. The work below, Major Stars by John Tremblay, immediately caught my eye. I was able to find a few of his other works online. I definitely prefer the shaped canvases to the flat geometric compositions.

ARTmonday: Isabelle Abramson

Photo: Ben Sheldon

Boston-based ceramicist Isabelle Abramson, creator of Isabelle Abramson Ceramics,  is a self-taught artist who learned to work with clay while she worked as a school nurse for a day job. The kids must have been pretty healthy, because she absolutely perfected her craft. Her pieces are gorgeous.

Isabelle shows her work at her studio at 450 Harrison during SoWa’s First Fridays. Jane Miller offers a small collection for sale at her shop J.E.M.

Speaking of which, Jane is hosting an event this week at which Isabelle will be present and previewing new works:  “A South End Design Moment”, Thursday, April 22nd, 6pm – 9pm at J.E.M., 470 Shawmut Ave., Boston.

Montage: 65 Palm Beach Style Rooms

With summer not far away, it’s no surprise I’ve got color on my mind. Not that I’ll ever go all out in my own house, but I definitely admire the mix of brights that designers employ in rooms with WASP style. The color, the prints, the faux bamboo, the ornate mirrors, the ugly porcelain frogs. It’s all a whirl of fun. Last month I put together two Palm Beach primers for The Inside SourcePart 1 focused on the work of designers Ellen Hamilton, Annsley McAleer, and Angie Hranowsky; Part 2 on Amanda Nisbet and Palmer Weiss. Here are more rooms with a Palm Beach aesthetic.

Montage: 33 Vintage Suitcase Stacks

I’m really not a dusty old suitcase kind of gal. But last month I was at designer Jeff Osborne’s South End loft (I’ll blog about it later this week), where I realized I must acknowledge the allure of vintage Vuitton. (His Vuitton is the second photo down.) While I won’t be procuring any of these pricey pieces (or their poor un-provenanced cousins), I certainly recognize a trend when I see one. I recently wrote “Trendlet Alert: Well-Traveled Luggage” for The Inside Source. Here’s an expanded montage.
