Montage: 43 Kid Rooms

Following up on Friday’s post about Susanna Salk’s upcoming book Room for Children: Stylish Spaces for Sleep and Play (Rizzoli), I’ve curated some of my favorite images of spaces for kids. At the end of the post, I’ve included links to my previous kid room posts. Definitely inspires me to at least clean up, if not redecorate.

Montage: 45 Striped Rooms

Years ago, one summer weekend when I opted to stay in the City over the Hamptons, I got really ambitious, and painted my little bathroom on East 87th Street with soft green and white stripes. Well, it was already white, so I only painted the green. Only? I measured, taped, painted, painted again, waited for it to dry, and peeled. Done before the boyfriend arrived back on Sunday night. I don’t remember what he thought, I guess it was fine, but I remember that someone else described it as looking like a candy store. I suppose, depending on what you keep in your medicine chest that could be accurate…

Montage: 31 Chevron-Adorned Interiors

The cover of this month’s Elle Decor motivated me to put together a chevron montage. It’s funny, because the chevron in this photo is just one element of a room loaded with pictures, yet its boldness pushed it to the forefront of my mind.

I love the pure graphic punch of the flat weave zigzag rugs, even though I probably wouldn’t make such a statement in my house. I think I’d find myself distracted, staring at it until I got that dizzying effect where your eyes go all funny. (Procrastinating is simply a way of life when you work from home.) But I love the way they look in photographs.

When I was about thirteen, I made my father paint a zigzag motif in my bedroom. I got the idea from a sitcom called “Too Close For Comfort,” (anyone remember that?) in which one of the daughter’s room had this funky stripe painted around her room. I simply had to have that look. I took liberties with the colors though. My walls were repainted a bright, clear sky blue. The stripe, a sort of zigzag/vee shape on the feature wall, was navy blue. The pièce de resistance was the white comforter with crisp, multicolored rainbow, compliments of Caldor. The rainbow, cloud, sun ceramic mobile from my best friend Marcia completed the look. Dated, yes, but for a teeny bopper, pretty pulled together.

Montage: 30 Spaces with Sputnik Chandeliers

I’m not really all about retro, but I am loving sputnik chandeliers. (Though I wonder if the trend will be too over soon. These days it’s really about the raw light bulb.) Chunky chrome anemone fixtures, spiky brass models, expansive hand blown glass designs, and crystal floret-adorned vintage beauties are all still on my mind. I’m thinking an amazing, somewhat intricate eBay find would add glamour to my soon-to-be-in-the-works living room. (Of course, I’d need to hire an electrician.) While I’m at it, a sleeker model might be just the finishing touch my bedroom needs. I must do an accompanying “Get the Look” post to this montage. Stay tuned. (A post on exposed light bulbs is also in progress.)

Montage: 34 Rooms with Poufs

The ubiquitous pouf. They’re everywhere. Moroccan-style poufs, knitted poufs, even wire poufs (though not sure those are actually poufy). I finally purchased one for myself. It’s silver metallic, and sits in front of the white sofa with the gray ikat pillows, which sits in front of my white bed, which sits in front of an accent wall covered with a white wallpaper with silver metallic circles. Seems stylish, right? Guess who hates the pouf? He thinks it looks like a giant, shiny soccer ball.

Here are enough photos of gorgeous rooms to prove that the pouf really is at the height of fashion.
